I know alot of people have done custom mods to the stock VFR exhaust so I thought I would post my version on here. This is fairly more involved than most of the quick mods people do, but i'll try to explain it in case anyone likes it and wants to give it a shot. And feel free to contact me with any questions.
I don't have many good pictures but ill try. My goals here were to make the mufflers louder and also shorten them and change the look of the tips.

I found a set of stockers on Craigslist for $65. I started by wiz-wheeling the end caps off of both mufflers. I tried to keep the end caps in good shape by making a single straight cut the whole way around.

Once I had the end caps off, I sawed 3.5" off of the muffler body. This includes the wall of the muffler, the perforated sheet and insulation and also the internal exhaust tubes that span the length of the muffler.

Next I cut the stock tips off of the end caps. I opened up the diameter to about 1 1/8". Then I took some chomoly tubing (1 1/4") and cut 4 tips that are about 1 3/8" long. I welded the tips onto the end caps, centered over the stock holes. So I basically just made the tips bigger and longer.

Next I welded the end caps back onto the mufflers. Note: The steel in the factory mufflers does not weld very nice but I wasn't too worried about how the welds look because I covered them all. Lastly for the main mufflers, I ground off the bolt mounts from the 3.5" section that was removed and transplanted them onto the new muffler. I moved 2 of the mounts for the end cap heat shields and one mount for the rear attachment of the main heat shields.
    7.jpg
Next I shortened the main heat shields. To do this just carefully scribe a line and whiz wheel it into two pieces. Then just polish the edge until you are satisfied.

I had do drill and transplant the grommet and spacer for the rear mounting hole.

Then I took the end cap heat shields and ground them down to open up the diameter (to account for the bigger tips) and also to change the look a little.

That was basically it. There are some small things I probably missed but the end result has been pretty good. I think the mufflers look better being shorter and it definitely has a nice sound. I was worried that it would be obnoxiously loud but its exactly what I hoped for...reasonable at idle but opens up above 5k.

Thanks for the pics of the process. Do you have any pics of the bike from other angles?
