Now that's what i call adventure, to me that's what it's all about. I'm off to Thailand and Burma on a 3000m ride in April next year, and i can't wait for that. Be takin' my camera along for that one.

That sounds like an awesome trip John. I rented an XR200 (I know, small bike, not many large ones) in the Philippines last year and it was a blast. I can't tell you how much fun that I had. Are you bringing your own bike, or renting a bike there? If you are bringing your own, how in tarnation are going to get it there?
derstuka Actually we're renting a BMW 1200GS for the tour, if that can't do the trip then nothing on the planet can. It's about a three week trip in total, end up down near Phuket where they filmed the movie "The Beach".
That sounds pretty fun, but I'm thinking we should do it in say, the United States, then when we get braver try Canada, and for the next run Mexico and then maybe eventually on down through Central America and South America.
The whole point of adventures reg is to go somewhere completely and utterly different by motorbike, no offense but riding across america is hardly an adventure (unless you count the scenery) with highways, hotels and dunkin donuts. I know, i've done it a few times. Maybe once you get down into south america without using a plane, would it even come close to an adventure. The Angola story clearly shows what its like to take a bike somewhere completely different into an alien enviroment and soak up all the local scenery and what the local people have to offer, and i hope to have a similar experience next year when i do my trip to Thailand and Burma. The actor Ewan McGregor recently crossed the old Soviet Union by bike and i saw a documentary on that, one of the best bike trips i've ever seen.
That is so much of the greatness of it. I saw and learned so much more seeing the Philippines by public transit and motorcycles than I would have just renting a car and sticking to the highways. I loved it. Hey John, Can I be a nosey SOB and ask how much that trip of yours is setting you back per person? I would be very interested in something like that, based on cost however. Also, are you planning on just winging your accommodations (i.e. camping, cheap hotels, renting a room/hut from locals wherever you end up) or do you have set plans?
