Hey gang, I have a buddy in France that rides the Dakkar and in Algeria from time/time... he shared an online photo album with me from this year's ride... breathtaking! .... some day.... I LOVE watching the Dakar Rally. Makes Baja look like a walk in the park. It Does look like a hell of an aventure, but it is Africa. I remeber one year the Russians had to airlift all the races due to Bedouin Raiders, civil war and mine fields. A ride accross Africa? Ballsy! Stupid, But Ballsy! Get some Kevlar to back up your off road armor!
Well, not in Africa anymore.....South America now. From what I have read and seen, a lot of riders (besides some diehards and Frenchies) prefer it in South America over Africa....it is a wider variety of terrain. Such a sweet race either place....:vtr2:
Tons of actual info on the "Dakar" by searching. Anybody here actually ridden any in The Baja? Crusin TJ for panucha doesn't count. A variant on "Dakar" is "The Silk Way" we call it The Silk Road. It ain't a race it's a rally or ralleye really. I always felt kind of sorry for all those dudes who had to start in Paris. Lousy food, ugly chicas and froglegs. I know they were glad to get going so they could enjoy a decent McCamelburger in Africa while ducking rounds from AK47's. At least in Argentina you can get a decent taco or a bowl of red in Chile. All are guaranteed to be Harley free.
Gas stations too far apart for me and no Holiday Inn. Down there I think your woman has to carry your fuel in potery balanced on top of her head or tied in small jugs on each end of a stick. Honestly, awesome pictures - thanks for sharing!
