What's everyone's opinions on the ABS option on the VFR. I'm looking at buying a 6th Gen VFR. Not I'm sure if I should get one with ABS or not. Any input on this?

    Thanks

The non-ABS model has a linked braking system where if you use the rear brake, then pressure is also applied to the front brake and vice versa. I'm sure it is not as good as ABS, but I think it boils down to what your comfort level is with ABS versus the standard linked braking option.

I've owned two bikes (BMWs) w/abs. While I can not definitively say that my life was saved, I'm pretty sure an 11 year old mennonite girl - in the middle of my lane, in the middle of a blind curve, in the middle of no where - is real happy I had it.
So are the two dogs that ran in front of me within 3 days - out of nowhere.
Other than that, I never needed it. some might say I wasted my money.
Well, if so, at least I'm consistant. I think enough of ABS that I bought it again on my VFR. I hope I never need it (and I wasted my money)!

What I was trying to point out is that whether you go ABS or not, the non-ABS model's brake are not your standard type of brakes where the front and rear are independent as you'd find on a CBR. If you buy a VFR, the brakes are altered either with the linked braking or ABS.

Depends on your experience and comfort levels like stewartj239 said. I don't have it and I didn't want it when I ordered my bike. The VFR is already a complicated machine and a little more of a sportbike than a cruiser. If we were talking about an ST or a Goldwing maybe I would feel differently. I think riding aware and under control for the conditions are what save lives, not necessarily ABS. I had CBRs before this and none of the focused sport bikes have it. I'm used to it that way and thats the way I like it.

Personally, just the idea of ABS gives me the shivers, I've seen it work on cars okay, but they have 4 wheels to keep you up not so sure about wanting those to go off when I need brakes. I say keep it simple go with out, learn your braking skills.

1.Bike ABS is nothing like what you experience with car ABS. With all due respect to your vast experience - if you have never practiced panic stops to lock up with ABS yourself, then you have no idea what it's like, and you're scared of the monster under the bed.
    2. My point before was : it may not be YOUR life the ABS saves.
Saving the bike is not even worth entering into this discussion. We're talking lives and limbs - not plastic, aluminum, and steel.
    3. Sportbikes are all about weight, and being close to race bikes. ABS is all about safety - doesn't quite fit in with how sportbikes are marketed.
    4. ABS is not new, and is well proven. If you want a simple bike buy a Bonneville, not a VFR. I'm not losing any sleep at night worrying about my Honda ABS. Hell, if BMW could make a reliable system, anyone can!

ABS on my truck? Most definitely!

ABS on my bike? Thanx, but no.

ABS on your bike? That's entirely up to you.

Ive got it on my '07 and have had to toss on the brakes pretty hard once or twice. One of the times I could feel ABS come on, felt a lot like in a car really, the rapid actuation of the brakes. I do more and more twisties and so on these days, I have to say, I doubt it adds that much weight, and if it engages, you will be glad, cause things were going bad in a hurry.
Its not the kind of thing that hits every stop or slow-down. Its the kind of thing that pops up when the defecation is hitting the oscillation and keeps your wheels turning.
That being said, I can dig what the sport bike crowd is feeling, more techno-jazz while if you ride right, you wont need it. But for me, someone not super experienced, I figure I need all the help I can get.

Get ABS. There is no down side that I know of and a pretty big potential up side. AND learn your braking skills. ABS is no substitute for proper braking skills but there are odd times when no matter how good your skills are you are not going to get it quite right and ABS may save you. Pretty much all police bikes are equipped with ABS and they have some of the best rider training around. Enough said.
