My experience with (some models of BMW) required engaging the ABS periodically to keep the seals /pumps in operating order. So I'd do several (BMW) front and rear wheel ABS engagements per year. I now have a VFR800ABS. It's a linked ABS system. I can stand it on it's nose in the wet down hill and no skid so no ABS cycling. What do you do to engage the ABS?
Thanks in advance for your response.

    ABS Engagement

As far as I can see there is nothing in the Honda manual about riders needing to intentionally activate the system every x months.

Apart from specified servicing, it seems the only check you need to undertake, is to ensure the ABS light is on when the bike first starts up, and goes out and stays out once you exceed 5mph.

I have only once needed the ABS to work on my VFR and boy it is a life saver. Have no doubt there are super skilled riders out their - the Rossi's and Stoner's of this world who can out-perform an ABS system but I know I am not one of them. Honda's system is aimed at lesser riders like me who when suddenly faced with an imminent collision will instinctively grab the front brake with immense force (and in the panic completely forget they even have a rear brake). When the combined ABS system detects a panic braking application it sorts things out for you applying the maximum deceleration possible from the available grip on front and rear wheels, and within reason, it still gives you scope to make a small change of course to dodge around something.

Thinking back - the weird bit is I do not recall any feeling that the system was active - no vibration through the lever, no pulsing, it just slowed the bike at an astonishing rate. It is very easy to spot when the ABS system on my car cut's in, but on the VFR I can't say I noticed it. The only real sign it was working is the dent in the tank. :eek:hwell:

I guess if you feel unsure about whether the system is working OK on your bike, you could find a safe place to test it out, but it would be a crying shame if you manage to drop the bike whilst testing.. So take care.

    SkiMad,
No manufacturer recommends intentionally cycling the ABS pumps. However, IMO it is good practice as mechanical parts need to move and seals in ABS pump will dry out. Anyhow, I engaged both front and rear ABS today. The rear pump is under the seat and can be heard once the rear is activated. The front pump is under the tank and makes a similar thump thump sound. It took a bit to get the front to lock , but once I crossed the threshold is got easier with each pass. I'm not recommending others try this...it's just something I inherited from the BMW culture. I have not heard of ABS failure in Hondas so it may not apply to Honda at all .

The ABS model does a self check at each start up. ABS red light goes out at at 6 MPH this indicates the ABS is activated.
