You pulled and cleaned the carbs, did you replace the carb boots? They tend to crack and bleed excess air into the intake after years of use. Spray carb cleaner or equivalent on each boot while it's running. If the idle jumps, the boot is bad.

Did you sync the carbs? If you don't sync the carbs after each R&R then there's a good chance they are out of sync, especially when you pull apart for a cleaning. The knocking noise is from the cylinders trying to move independently of each other and causing the lower end to become out of balance. Possible noises can be the piston itself, the transmission gears, the clutch plates against the basket. Sync your carbs within spec and the noises will go away. She may even run smoother without hesitation in midrange. If she doesn't, make sure you check your float bowl levels and also that your vacuum lines are intact and not leaking.

    BTW... nice ride! Welcome aboard!

Thanks again. Boots were not replaced, should have.

Carbs are not synced yet either, I was waiting for my gas tank to show up, as well as the air filter. Air filter showed up today.

The noise definitely isn't coming from the engine, it does it when I push it. It's like....nothing nothing nothing nothing, small clunk, nothing nothing nothing nothing, small clunk, rinse, repeat. Sounds from around the chain area, I may try to prop the bike up tomorrow and see if I can spin the wheel and hear it. I'm just worried about pushing the thing too fast and something bad happening. I've never ridden a bike before and man it's a rush! I really like this thing!

Anyone have pictures of the speedo cable or where it goes/connects? I'd like to have a speedometer.

the wires that are hanging appear to be for your horn.... yeah a cable is missing for your speedo and your chain is probably shot.....you may have a frozen link on it get a new one as soon as you can...spray it sdown with chain lube and see if the noise goes away......

    good luck

Thanks, but the horn is hooked up and works. I'll see if there's any debris in the chain and lube it.

Here is pic of the cable as it runs into the wheel. it runs through the loop on the bottom of the caliper. I have an one if you need it. not the greatest pic. it runs down the left side of the bike.

I will check in a few minutes and let you know. Where does the cable plug into the gauge bezel?

Regarding Lazy in Az post 61. The vacuum lines are only on the california model. Isn't that so? My standard 86 vfr 700f has rubber lines serving as vents. I may have missed it, but is fenders machine california emissions or standard?

Not sure if mine is standard or not, but I would assume standard since I'm on the East Coast.

Got the tank, man that thing is clean! I'm very happy I bought it, the coating inside looks great.

Now I know the one line goes to the fuel pump obviously, what about the other line? On the bottom of the tank I mean.

Line on the left towards the back of the tank (lower part of tank when mounted) is the fuel line to the pump. Also should be a fuel filter and another short piece of fuel line preceding the pump. Most honda dealers should have a white plastic fuel filter (aftermarket) they sell for goldwings, etc that work nicely. Also see on ebay alot. The other line higher up & on the right is the vent. It has to be routed & ends up on the lower left side of the bike with a group of other drain tubes. I will add a pic from the manual to the others. Sounds like it will be rideable in the near future! Tip: Mount the fuel line to the tank first. Mount the tank on bike and the make your fuel pump connection, even if you have to remove the fuel pump temporarily due to clearance issue.

Correction: Thats the trouble with going from memory. Checked the manual, the fuel tank vent line is routed on the right side of cycle.

That other line from the bottom of the tank is not a vent but a drain of fuel or rainwater from the pocket around the fuel filler hole.

Fender, get some rider's training. The VFR is not a good beginner bike, too heavy & too top heavy for a new rider, especially in low speed maneuvering.

Thanks guys, hopefully I will have it all put together tonight, and I'll post pics tomorrow.

I've been riding the bike for about a week, I know it's not the greatest beginners bike, but I haven't had any problems manuevering thus far. I'm not saying I won't dump it, but so far as good. I really enjoy riding it though! I couldn't start out on a 250, too little/slow IMO.
