Hi, Ive got bike #000046. It runs great but when under load at @ 4000 rpm engine develops a noticable knocking noise from the lower part of the engine. Seems to be most prevalent @ the clutch area. I'm in the process of replacing the clutch outer (basket) and spring. If this doesn't eliminate the knock, anyone have any other ideas........Thanks

That same knock on my R was a failed #2 connecting rod bearing. It scored the crank so that got expensive. Not saying that's your problem, only throwing it out there. I've never heard a clutch knock but who knows? If it is a bearing issue, you'll be hard pressed to find a dealer to work on it. You can still get the gaskets for it but if the crank is bad that could be an issue. I hope it's something simple but I have a funny feeling...

Have to agree, mine's got a similar noise I suspect may be the same thing. You may be able to replace the 3&4 bearings through the oil pan but it doesn't look easy, and probably not the recommended way. The 1&2 bearings look like you need to tear the motor down to get to.

Yeah, that does sound like a terminal rod knock, sorry , and it will only get worse until you hear and feel a BANG and your boot is covered in oil !!

Just admit it : riding an antique finally cought you out.

It's an old bike and doesn't want to run anymore, so find a newer gen VFR and stay in the family. These VF bikes are a little like our respected veterans of WW II..,..1000 die every day, sadly.

Does anyone really think it's worth throwing money into fixing a VF series when there are so many newer, better choices on the used market???

( some VF riders will want to roast my balls.....but WTF ??)

Repair isn't out of the question but requires some commitment. If it is junk, look for a motor on ebay or elsewhere. My original motor failed in 1987. If I took some peoples advice, I'd have a 1000 hurricane for the past 22 years. Not very appealing is it? Get it fixed or grab another motor. Buying new is easy but not nearly as cool. Thank God early Mustang owners didn't have this same outlook.

Hmm, I don't want to "roast your balls", and I haven't been on this board very long, but "get rid of it" seems to be a somewhat common answer for you friend...

I'd say that's where it probably comes from (the ball roasting thing..)

    Lets not hang him yeat

    Hey

You say it is coming from your clutch area.Does it happen when you pull the clutch lever also and when you are in neutral or is just when you are at 4000 rpm.For the first rod bearing has gone in my bike and I did it up you will hear that noice when you start your bike untill you turn it off.I have a noice at my clutch area (note my clutch is long gone, caput, smoked) and when I am driving I can hear a sound much like the bearing sound. And I can almost be 90% sure that my problem is a split gear(that is a device witch sits behind the clutch outer house and it keeps pressure to the gearbox and the clutch at all time ro reduce gear noice).

    Best regards

    Gunnar

    Hey

For the first still these bike are 2 and half times younger then you are. When I bought my bike up a VF700F I could only ride it for 4 months (then a rod bearing broke) and that was enough so I started to fix it up and kept in mind when I would be finished I will know where I stood with my bike (Just like I have bought it new) and I am just 24 years old just like my bike. And now I couldn´t be happier riding this bike and being able to fix it also.(I wouldn´t and couldn´t fix a 2006 model of vfr). But I can do that with my bike a vf model. And don´t get me started on the beautiful sound in the motor when it hits the 8000 rpm . Lets hope when you will start to fail that someone thinks you are worth it . Just because it is old doesn´t mean it is OLD.

    Best regards

    Gunnar
