Okay guys, I looked at an 84 vf 500 thats for sale locally. Here's the scoop. I want to teach my fiancee how to ride and I thought it'd be a pretty good starter. But, it needs work. Just from a glimpse it looks like it needs brake pads, turned or new discs, ?clutch work (leaking down at the case) lots of cleanup. the fairing is scraped, the paint faded, gas tank dented, tires ok for a while, electrics work signals and all, not too much rust. Is this bike worth $500? The guy says he just wants to get rid of it so I might get it cheaper... I'm pretty much thinking it's gonna need a teardown to clean it and replace hoses, gaskets, etc. What do you think? Do it or not? It's a second bike so I don't have to depend on it for riding soon or anything. What about parts? Is it going to be too hard to find parts for this bike? reg
Well Vin I did it. The pics will be posted shortly. I ended up paying $300 for it. I figure I can't lose too bad on that. It's gonna need work, but it actually will run now. I don't plan on running it in this shape, though. I want to tear it down and clean it up. I'm going to order a haynes or clymer for it now. Take a look at the pics. The seat will be off to be recovered soon! Duct tape will not cut it for my girl. haha...
That'll be a god fixer too. You might even be able to find some parts here and/or on ebay as well. And being that those bikes sit lower then later models, it will definately make a good starter bike. The $300 was well spent cause even if you never fixed it, you could part it for that. Good job, reg. I am sure you will do a great job getting fixing what needs done. :smile:
Yeah, I was kind of on the fence about it. He wanted $500 and I just couldn't go there. I was figuring it's gonna need at least $500 in work. I think it's going to make a good learner for my fiancee, though. And from what I read, it'll stay peppy enough to keep her interest for quite a while. Assuming she is interested in riding at all.
