so, after only three short years the battery has decided it is going to go on me. Went to the local motorcycle shop to verify that it was the battery, not the charging system. Sure enough, the battery just drops & drops. So, I orded what was on the YUASA battery chart and what was the the parts unlimited book. Said to get YTX12BS.

Upon getting the battery, I took it home, dropped the acid into it, charged it, tried to swap it. Wrong battery. too tall. So, just as a warning, these bikes need a YTZ12 MF battery, which is a gel battery. and otrageously priced. I don't or won't do a cheap battery becuase if I'm miles from home, I don't want something stupid to keep me from returning home.

I just posted this as a warning to all others, that if you are looking to swap out the battery, make sure it's the one in the bike, not the one the book says.

You didn't cross reference measurements of your current battery to the catalog listings? Or did they only list part numbers?

When I replaced my battery I just took measurements to the store and did that there.

Are AGM and Gel the same thing? I've seen them used synonymously on some listings. I run the AGM(absorbed glass matt) Everstart max from Walmart without a problem. I also run the Walmart batteries in my F150 without a problem.

I figured that two different places that showed the same battery must be correct. I, not the shop, looked at the dimensions or measured. I don't have to pay for the mistake, bike was there. I have been going to that same shop for about 14 years now, and he's always treated me right.

As far as the AGM & gel being the same thing, I have no idea.

Mine went out a month or two ago and I was shocked that it cost about $200. I got one from a friend at NAPA for about $60 with the discount. It doesn't have quite as many cold cranking amps but it seems to work fine.

I bought a Scorpion battery online this spring, It was reasonably priced, it shipped quickly, fit fine and I have not had any problems with it:smile:
It is a sealed gel battery and I had to do nothing with it.
I did put it on the charger when I got it, but it was fully charged as the charger shut off after 10 minutes.

+1 on the Walmart batteries. Priced very reasonably, and Ive never had a problem with them. Been using them as replacement batteries in cars for many years.
