    Hi,

I am the proud owner of a new 03 (silver w/ABS). I do my own oil changes, chain tension and Lube. Is there really a need for me to fork over $250+ for the first service? Do they really do anything besides those items I mentioned?
Sometimes I think these things are in place just for dealer profit. Its not like our bikes vibrate all that much that things should come loose.

I have not taken any of my new cars in to the dealers for regular maintenace. Just change oil and filters as required and visit for warrantee work only.

Of course I do not want to do anything that would risk safety or the longevity of my Viffer.

    Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken the 600 mile service includes a check of fastener torque, obvious oil change, and overview of components to ensure proper function. I'm taking mine in today so I'll post back with any additional information.

I hope you're not paying $250 for your 600 mile service. Mine was only around $100 (Honda, Middletown, Ohio). That was parts (oil, filter were the only parts) and a $55 an hour labor fee. How long does it take them to change the oil, check fluids and check chain tension?

I paid $120 for my 600 mile service which included labor. They change the oil and filter, check and adjust the chain and brakes, and check all of your major systems and components. They also check tire pressure and will answer any questions which may have come up during your first miles of riding.

Took my '03 in today for the 600 mile service. Changed the oil, checked the tire pressure and cleaned and adjusted the chain: $82.00. On the ride home I noticed an unusual whine and a vibration around my feet. Stopped and checked the chain and found they had it much too tight. Rode right back to the dealership and they readjusted it to spec. Seems the tech had adjusted the chain with the bike on the centerstand. Once it was on the ground with my weight on the suspension, the chain could hardly flex at all.

I took my '03 in for the 1000 km (Cdn eh !), I was more concerned about possible future warranty problems.

I just did my 600 service last weekend and paid $99 bucks and change for the works. Check of all major components, tighten everything. I had to ride a ways to get that deal, the local shops were twice that amount. I would definitely do it for no otherreason to have a complete maintainence record, more attractive on trade-in/resale.

Hey John. Welcome to the forum. Yeah, I guess some of the techs don't realize that adjusting the chain on a bike with a sssa is a little diferent than one with a regular swing arm. Glad you got it straightened out tho.

It's good to have you here, man.
