Late last season I changed my coolant with no issues. I've come to notice now that I have a few rides under my belt that my coolant reservoir is emptying itself. I filled it once, rode something like 250 miles, checked it again and it was down almost totally empty. Since the second time I filled it, I changed the oil, no signs of coolant there. It is not running hot at all, never has any puddles and I cannot notice anything on the engine, no visible leaks. I do smell coolant when at idle and warmed up when the fans come on...could I have a pin hole in my radiator? I'm stuck. Help me please. Thanks.

Could be anywhere - but my money says the o-rings on the crossover tube are leaking. The coolant leaks and puddles on top of the engine below the carbs. The engine heat evaporates the coolant so you don't see drips or puddles on the ground and get to enjoy the sweet aroma of anti-freeze whenever you stop at a light.

Fer grins check the radiator cap, see if the coolant is up to the filler neck or so. If its not the bike could just be sucking in what it wants and adventually your overflow tank will stabalize. Could be that you underfilled the radiator during your coolant change.

My 91 never uses any coolant and its got 76,000 miles and counting. It is a smelly bike though when you turn it off after romping around on it though, gas smells not anti-freeze (I despise the smell of napom in the morning, err I mean anti-freeze).

Keep in mind that removing the radiator cap itself is a two beer job LOL! Good luck and keep us posted.

the rad cap is most likely the issue... I had a similar problem before i determined that you spin on the cap, then press down to compress the sring, then turn another 1/4 turn... all good from there.

it fakes you out on the initial turn, the press and turn some more is the secret

I'm still saying it's the crossover tube o-rings and will bet betarace $10. Loser pays their $10 to the winner's charity of choice.

Look hondas don't leak, it's always something simple - usually user error.

    Bet is on

I would generally agree. But I've been burned by the crossover tube and Echo3 just had the same.

Some homeless kid in Yemen is getting a steak dinner care of betarace!! :whoo:

I haven't noticed any more coolant missing, it seems to have stabilized. I haven't found any leaking tubes or o rings. I'm thinking it may have been user error. I don't recall the rad cap spinning on more than the half turn....I may have to get back in there to give it a twist again. Good excuse to solve my headlight adjustment issues. Sorry if I cost someone ten bucks. Charities will be happy...I'd suggest sending it to vfrworld.

    What??!!

Come on, there's no definitive cause or solution found. A change in ambient temperature will affect the o-rings and cause them not to leak. My 500 interceptor also leaked coolant and only when it was around freezing temps outside.

Until/unless a real solution is found, I'd probably suggest rolling the wager over and upping the anti on the next bet to $20.

Or open a poll. But I'm hitting the road today and won't be around for the next week.

That's fine. I can pay up on the bet but refuse to concede victory.

My boots are on and I'm pulling out of the driveway in minutes. I'll have to settle up when I get back. They want me to create an account and shit. PM me your paypal addy and you can make the donation yourself.

I can honestly say that it was the rad cap. I've rechecked the levels and it's holding steady. Ever since I opened it up, checked that the level was up to the filler neck and re-sealed it, it's been fine. Overflow tank hasn't moved from the top level with at least 400 miles of riding since the last fill. If I end up discovering any leaks in the future, I'll be sure to let you know. (if you need a judge, I'm going to rule for beatrace- you'll notice the thanks button, maybe you can give me my first "thanks" beatrace_)
