Looking at a 2005 VFR800 ABS with 36,000 miles. Bike is clean, with no damage, and owner seems knowledgeable and an enthusiast. What specific things should I check or ask about before handing over the $$?

Good luck in your potential purchase.

2002-05 had a wiring harness recall. Check if that was done.
See if it has owners manual & tool set (including chain spanner)
    Seat cowl
Service records - valves are scheduled to be done at 16K. Most people don't do them that early, but at 36K you might want to consider. Its about a $600 to $800 job.

Does he have any other extras or mods?

Damages can be easily repaired. I would pull the fairings off and check in behind for signs of droppings. I don't mean chicken droppings either. The brackets that the faring bolts screw into bend very easily. A quick look at the clearances of the fairings to the tank and frame are a good place to start. Having said all that, a drop of the bike is not even close to the end of the world. Many of us have dropped them many times. A crash of course is another matter. If it were crashed, and you are not really talented with repairs, walk away.

You didn't mention a price. The mileage on that bike is nothing to concern yourself with other than the valve clearances. That is a pricey shop job if you can't do it yourself. I doubt that they are even out of spec at that mileage anyways.

Good luck and post up pix if you buy.

I bought my 2003 with 27K miles. Looked clean, but on closer inspection I saw passenger foot pegs had deep scrapes in the folded up position. No other signs of a bad slide. Fairing looked original, (normal wear). I have had all fairings off, nothing else obvious. check rear foot peg bracket.

    Price....? :pop2:
I assume it is SILVER the fastest colour
As mention above 36k is nothing for the VFR check for maintenance record and if your heart tell you this is the one and the price is within your liking then go for it,
Good luck and keep us posted
