My bike was crashed prior to my buying it. It had been repaired and I was unable to tell until later when I pulled the front fairing I can see that the speedo cluster and mounting bracket have been damaged and repaired. The ABS light never even comes on so there is no way to diagnose what may actually be wrong. I need to find out if the LED is good first and try to get it working so that I can begin to diagnose what else may be wrong. Does anyone have any knowledge of this system or where and how I should start? I have always done all my own repairs and maintained my own bikes for 40+ years so I'm pretty mechanically inclined. I have a shop manual but apparently I need to get the ABS light working in order to troubleshoot. Any ABS geniuses out there? (Actually you don't need to be a genius, just sorta smart)

You might wanna start by looking at the wiring diagram and checking to see if the cluster is even getting signal to turn on the ABS lamp. If you're getting voltage and ground for the bulb check on key up, then your next step might be pulling the cluster and taking it appart to see if it's damaged internaly. Outside of that, I'm planning on sending my cluster out to have the light color redone. I'm not sure if they could repair yours but it's just a light, I don't see why they wouldn't. Check out bluegauges.com.

Thanks for the response. I already have Bluegauges saved in my favorites and had thought about that. They change all your LED's so I would imagine they fould check and replace that one if it's bad, my only reservation to doing this is that, as I said, the cluster is damaged (the mounting points on the back have been broken and repaired and I hate putting that money into a damaged piece. What I think I'll try is figuring out which wire feeds it and then checking for power at the plug on the back of the cluster and if there's power there, then seeing what they may charge to just repair that one LED.

What indicators lead you to believe that the ABS is inoperable?

I would have to say, attach a multi meter to the leads going to the ABS light, if the system is working the meter should read zero once the bike goes over 5mph. I don't have ABS on my 02 and I am pretty sure the light on the dash stays on untill the bike goes over 5-10mph.

You stated you have a manual, on page 16-2 there is a break out diagram that simplifies the circuit. It looks like you have two grounds and four fused power wires to the ABS unit one of them is the lead to the light. A quick check of those with a meter and verify the light itself has not failed should bring alot of light to the failure. Nothing else in the system is needed to to power up the ABS unit and bring the light to life and if I am not mistaken the light should come on just by unplugging the harness from the ABS unit.
