Hi Everyone, Picked up a 1985 VF700F this weekend in Auckland New Zealand. It's been sitting for 8-10 years. It's Not in the best of shape; tank full of varnish, missing panels, surface rust on the frame etc. i have zero mechanic experience but wanted to give it a try. I got the shop manual online and have been browsing this forum which is amazing so far..........Looking forward to learning a lot. The site said 'introduce yourself' so i did that here - I would be keen to update my progress as i go along - should i create a separate thread in the 1st/2nd gen area? Cheers
You have you work cut out for you! Mine sat for a number of years, but it didn't look that rough. Is there any shop there that can clean the tank professionally? The tank has two convoluted tubes inside that feed the petcock on the side of the take, very hard to clean. I would start with the tank, if you can get that sorted out, then move on to the rest of the bike. Good luck, it will be worth it in the end.
Yeah certainly got my work cut out! Got the seat and tank off yesterday, as well as a few things like the battery and rear light system, all the fairing. Tank probably had a couple of litres of sexy brown water in it There was no chunks of rust at all, more like a fine deposit of rust, looked like a gold diggers pan. The float for how full the tank is (not sure what its called?) is pretty dirty too, took a picture of it this morning and its caked in crap. I seen a lot of youtoob talking about cider vinegars...thinking it could sit full of that for a while. Will have to get inside there with a torch and see how bad it really is. Thanks for the reply....appreciate it Cheers
Rust rust and more rust. Very sad it was submerged in knows what. That tank look like it was repainted, were are the wings? Saw one today at the Rock Store, mint....think it needs a complete tear down restored the right way.....who knows whats floating around inside that v45 .... gotz alot of work ahead of ya....got it fir $0. so hopefully you do it justice....
