I've got a pretty 85 VF500 in pretty good shape, bought it a week ago but just the last 2-3 days when I start it up i'm getting a tick in the engine but then it goes a way, almost like something is loose when its cold but tightens up when it heats and expands. The noise doesn't last but naturally I'm still concerned.

    Any thoughts?

Proper maintenance is the key to the VF500F's longevity.

If you don't know the history of the bike as first step I would inspect and adjust the valves.

Here is a link to more information on different valve adjustment techniques for the VF500F:

On a side note - I would highly recommend purchasing a used Factory Service Manual (eBay is a good source for these). It's a must have on a VF500F owner's library shelf!
