1984 VF750F with 16K miles

Hello,
Overall the bike is in nice shape, I just had some new Bridgestone BT045's put on along with a new chain. Next I need to clean out the tank. Although the bike runs, there is a failed tank coating in the gas tank along with some rust. I want to be careful of the paint, since the paint is all orginal. Is there a way to clean the tank out that will not damage the paint? Thanks.
