The high/ low setup is great, I worked with a company to come up with a correct system for our bikes, I also have a set for sale for 185.99 + shipping.
The upgrade is amazing, and easy to install.

Bryan are you able to get any more sets together at that price? Also what color spectrum and how big are the balasts?

Euhm. Make sure that the temperature the HID lamps generate are ok for the current plastics... So many people, with cars, put HID lamps in which ends up melting everything.

I've done it on a few bikes, none from this forum, and there is no risk. I haven't had a 6th gen customer yet but they shouldn't cause any problem.

I recently installed HIDs on my 6th gen, and I really love it. The light stays low on the road like the H4s, however the beam cutoff isn't quite as sharp. The wash of light they produce is amazing. While they don't seem to consume much power in normal operation, they do draw a lot of current as they are igniting (up to 10 amps).

I installed one ballast on the ABS ECU bracket and the other one on the engine ECU bracket. As a result, I can't reinstall the black inner fairing pieces. This is functionally not a problem, but it means I can see the radiator cap now when I'm sitting on the bike. Some day I'll find a better spot, but that's the best I could do at the time. Seems there isn't much free space in the front end of the VFR.

    HID headlights

I have a 6th gen that I put the HID headlights in myself and it works awesome. The 6th gen bikes have seperate high and low beams, so I didn't have to mess with the high beams at all. I was able to mount both of the ballasts in between the left side plastics and that black inner plastic linning(they are attacthed to that linning) and they fit real snug in there. I was able to get mine for $145.00 (US Dollars) and could get them in almost any color spectrum, I chose the 10K for mine. They actually run cooler than your typical halogen bulb, and they use less power. The initial startup may draw a lot of power just to start them say for instance 70watts, but once they are lit they only use about 10 to 13watts to stay running. Compare that to your continous 50 to 60watt halogen bulb. That frees up more power to be used elswhere! It also puts less strain on your bikes charging system:cool:. I've done a lot of different mods to my bike and lots of friends bikes, and this is by far the easiest mod to do!

I just started working for a company that sells HID lighting. We're targeted towards mostly BMWs car market, but we carry all the stuff needed for bikes.

We have Hi-Lo kits as well, I was going to get one on my bike, but alas there'd be no point now (Bike's gone).

Ballasts from 35w-55w, they are fairly thin and can be easily/reliably secured with double sided adhesive. 3k to 17k, depending on the bulb type.

If you want, shoot me a PM with your specific needs, I'll see what I can do for you, we have most types/temperatures ready to go.

I've been thinking an RC30 front fairing kit for my '86, using big HID bi-xenon projectors would be a slick setup...

One issue with the HID kits is that if you just getting rebased bulbs, you need to ensure that the rebased bulb keeps the HID arc in the same place as the filament from the halogen that it's replacing. Otherwise the light pattern will change shape.

    Technical explanation here:
Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply

    I'd love to run these:
    Hella 90mm Headlight Modules

but $$$, and not sure if they could be made to fit inside a replica RC30 front fairing.

Just an FYI, the small digital units are the way I went as they are ultra compact and draw less current than the larger analogue units.

They draw virtually the same current as your stock 50W as they are 35w bulbs plus a little inefficiency in the system.

    Stellar upgrade.

Another point, you should not run the normal H4 bulbs as they are unshielded and will blind oncoming traffic. I built small shields that block oncoming traffic from being able to see the actual bulb.

    what is the ballast

why do you have to put a ballast in. Isn't it just changing out one kind of light bulb for another?

No, HIDs and Halogens produce light by completely different methods.

HIDs utilize an arc, similar to electrical arc welding, to produce light. Halogens use the 'glowing' of filament to produce light.

I know that this thread is old, but....anyone have any new HID info? It is hard to find threads about this because the search page won't search for HID because it is too short! I have an 04 and would like Hi/Lo HID. If I were to replace all 4 bulbs, would I need 4 ballasts? With a hi/lo kit, do I just change out the low beam bulbs and d/c the high beam bulbs, using the high beam switch to change the HID bulb from hi to lo? Are there projector lenses that go along with HID bulbs for the VFR? Are there any Angel Eye projector HID mods?
