    Hey everybody,

I will be heading up to Oregon with the gf in about less than a month (in my truck) for a short vacation. Looks like June 7th we are leaving, and coming back on the 14th or so....we play things by ear, so it could be earlier. I know how to do searches and find the tourist traps, but what about some locals that can give me some secret, hush, hush, places to see, things to do, trails to hike, etc, etc.....maybe we could meet up with any folks that want to grab a bit to eat with us as well. I want to try and bring the mtn bikes, but I am not sure about that yet. Some of the trails the gf is just not ready for. Might be hiking/sight-seeing/looking for good weed....just messin' about the later.

Well, so far, I wanted to see:

    Crater Lake
    Hood National Park
Some cool place by the coast??
    Neat local places trails?
    Good places to eat?
    Places to camp?
    Cheap hotels in your town?

    Winery Tours
Portland Rose Festival (you'll be comming in on the tail end of it.... I am sure your gf would enjoy Fleet Week when all the hot sailors are in town :eyebrows:)

Honestly there is SOOOOO much to do in Oregon! I will have to update this post when I am home from work tonight with links and other ideas.

I enjoyed driving up the Columbia river, stopping at the dam and seeing fish swim by. Some neat hikes up the face of the gorge if you make it up to Portland and head east up the river.

    Can you say "GoreTex"?

    enjoy....

Dude, Shorty just barely touched it. So many cool things, just depends on where actully you are going to be or plan on. I can name quite a few. as mention any place along the Columbia River, then there's out in NW Oregon along the coast, then If And I highly suggest it, is if you're this close you might as well hit up Mt St Helens. only a few hours up and back from Portland. Best give me a call or whatever when it gets closer, Just might have to hook up.

If you go to Crater Lake, take route 97 up to Bend. Stop there for a bit and find any place that will serve you a Black Butte Porter or 6. It's brewed there in Bend, great beer. Take route 20 just north of Bend to route 126 and then to 242. It is an old scenic route that goes through some incredible lava fields. 242 will meet back up with 126 and take you back to the Willamette Valley in Eugene. There are a lot of quirky places to stop and eat there.

Hike Saddle Mountain to the top. Google it.

Spend an evening in Astoria at the Cannery Pier Hotel. Get a river view room. Your girlfriend will love it!

Cannon Beach and Ecola State Park.

Oswald West - great trails to the beaches.

    Camping? What's that . . . ?

Doing the Oregon coast myself later part of June with the wife myself. Driving hte flagship and pulling the fifth wheel on this trip. Wiffie isn't into the bike thing. Will be taking the peddle pusher but the wife doesn't do much of that either. Her bike is some 15 years old and still has all it's injection knobbies on the tires. Never been there before so looking forward to this.

Hey Alaskan. A cruise up the inner passage to your neck of the woods sounds like it may be in the cards sometime soon. Used to watch the cruise ships float by when I lived in Campbell River on Vancouver Island.

Thanks everybody! I appreciate all of the input. Oh, and RV, I will let you know more when I do. Maybe you can borrow that new 1098 from your friend so I can ride the gf around on something? I am not sure if we are gonna break into WA...but ya never know....sometimes I get a wild hair up my :ass: It would be cool to meet up with some of the folks up there.

Shorty, thanks for all of your info...I look forward to the rest of it. It will help us out a lot. Oh, and I/we love waterfalls by the way!

Randy!, let me know when you're coming. I'll give you the key to my VF750F if you want to have your own (two) wheels while you're here in Juneau. The cruises are a great way to see the Inside Passage. However, AVOID the period from mid-August to the end of the season unless you don't mind the rain. The weather is variable the rest of the season.

If you come, make sure you guys take the train from Skagway up to White Pass. It's the most fantastic railroad line in North America!

Hey. Look at where I live. The only place wetter is Prince Rupert and Kitamat. I have friggin skin growing between my toes. My flathead family from the prairies call me Kermit. The cruise is a bit of a long shot though. But I would sure like to do it. My wife is another story though. She is the shopping type while I tend to do the outdoors thingy.

I love storms on the water. I get orgasmic feelings every time a southeaster blows up when I lived in Campbell River A whole new story on another thread.

And be sure to bring a chainsaw, a weed eater, a yard blower, several types of pesticides, insect repellent and raingear. Oh, wait, you'll only be there 4 or 5 days... you won't need the yard blower.

    Har, har! Have fun!

Holy shizzle shorty! You are like a friggin' "Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Guide!" Maybe you are in the wrong line of work?! haha

Seriously, thank you very much. The gf and I love hikes to waterfalls and such. It looks and sounds really cool.

Meeting up with some of you folks might be a definite possibility. I really "wing" my trips, so spontaneity is what it is all about!

Can I back up and knock it over like domino's with my truck (National Lapoon's European Vacation)?

Where you been hiding LG? I was almost ready to call up some crazy liberals up in Berkeley to come find your arse! I was gonna tell them that you were a George Bush supporter....

Take route 30 out of Troutdale just east of Portland on I-84. In about a 20 mile stretch there are at least 4 oportunities to do just this. Most with in a 20 minute walk of the road. None of these falls are huge, but they are kinda off the beaten path.

VFRShorty is right, derstuka. I am being too harsh. You can probably get by with insect repellent, raingear, a hatchet, and a shotgun.

Oh, you DID notify your parole officer that you were leaving the state, I hope...

If, by any chance, you end up on Highway 126 that goes from Eugene to the coast, about 10 miles out of Eugene proper you will come to the small burg of Veneta. On the right hand side of the highway used to be a small coffee shop called "Dixie's". If you like biscuits and gravy or hashed browns and gravy (actually on the menu!), stop and have some. You can feel your arteries clog as you eat, but it is worth it!

Ok, I need to look at a map and see how far that Mt St helens is from Portland, because that was probably gonna be the farthest north that we were gonna go.

Do they still have the scheduled eruption times? Every 88 minutes like Old Faithful? haha....c'mon, that was at least a little funny. :smash:

Sounds like a good place to check out if I happen by. I love to try little hole-in-the-wall places.

Oh, and the parole :mod: doesn't need to know about this little adventure....besides, that happened a long time ago, and I was sorry for doing that and burying that guy way out in the desert.... :laser::faint:
