My new to me 5th generation has 16k miles. It runs great after it's up to at least 150-160°F

Prior to this operating temperature, it stumbles trying to accelerate between 4000-6000 rpm. The more throttle, the more it stumbles. The fast idle control works fine, and even when cold, once past 6k rpm everything smooths out.

Is this a common behavior, or is there something I should check out?

Are you using the fast idle control when this stumble happens?

Mine is cold blooded until I get her warmed up.

the 2000 VFR has no manual fast idle control, I think it uses something called a wax fast idle control.

Whoops, for some reason I was thinking that you had a '98 like mine...you are right, they eliminated the fast idle in '00. It does seem a little odd that the bike is doing that then...you might need to see about another user with a '00-'01 sees when they run their bike.

My 2001 runs great at any RPM and at any engine temp.

I have read of people having trouble with the wax unit - it can get gunked up and stop working correctly. If I were you I would search for it and you should see several discussions on it...

My 2000 does not have the fast idle lever. It automatically runs the idle up to about 2200-2500, occasionally up to nearly 3500, until it is satisfied with the temp & then it back back down to 1250.

Hummm??? What could cause a a misfire only when cold on a FI'd bike? I'm leaning towards the plugs. I'm thinking that your plugs might be slightly fouled & this is contributing to the misfire. When the engine is hot, the high temps in the cylinder temp assists in the combustion process whereas when it's cold, it relies soley on the spark. If the plugs look like crap, get some new ones & make sure to gap them correctly, use anti-seize specifically for aluminium heads & torque them to the correct specs.

    KC-10 FE out...

    my bike does it too!!

Interesting, I have a 2001 (5th gen) with 18Kmi on her and she has the EXACT same behavior.
misfires and stumbles in the following range:
    <145F engine temp
    4K-6K engine speed
    >30% throttle

has been getting progressively worse over the last year, but misfire goes away completely after fully warm engine.
jfremder, did you ever sort this out?
