i like star trek, but the writing for the original is absolutely horrible. at the least in comparison.

    anyone agree?

I'm am By Far one of the Biggest Sci-fi fans on the east coast that does not attend conferences and dress up.... (Although I did once for Halloween) I disagree... The Original Star Trek was very well written for the time... Keep in mind it was the late 60's and much was going on and we had not even gotten to the moon yet....

I would postulate that perhaps the last season was not as great as the rest because NBC cut the budget and just didn't "Get it" so it suffered accordingly...

Next Generation like the Borg strived for perfection and nearly achieved it... Albeit, week first season however, it was followed by some of the best written scripts and storylines ever put to television.... I submit there was not a child under 10 who did not watch STNG and who did not then have at least one nightmare of becoming assimilated...

I have mixed feelings about Deep Space 9... It wasn't bad but it was not great either... I submit the sure fire way to kill a Star Trek Series is to add a continuing primary plot about the federation being at war... (i.e. The Dominion War..) Star Trek had conflict yes but never out and out war and there may have been mild skirmishes with unknown aliens but differences were resolved and treaties entrenched and sometimes breached...The Dominion war killed Deep Space 9 and when they ended the war and the series started to get good again it was too late viewer ship had already wained...

Voyager was by far the most loved and equally hated show of the franchise... Nobody “kind of liked” Voyager... You either out and out hated it or absolutely loved it... No in between... I loved it! It was return to seeking out new life and new civilizations with an underlying mission to get home... Sure 7 of 9 was brought on in a “cat suit” to boost ratings and it did! But it also gave the writers opportunities to explore the regaining of humanity and the comparison of cold logic and compassion...

Enterprise...It had the most promise...Started out so well..... Then Rick Berman and Brannon Bragga did what they always do with a Star Trek series.... They killed it...... a 2% drop in ratings was unacceptable so they decided “hey if earth is in jeopardy people will watch it...” Enter both "The Xindi War" and the "temporal cold war" And they were shocked when ratings dropped another 15% the following season.... UPN thankfully killed the series before Mr Bragga and Mr Berman could make Gene Roddenberry turn in his grave even further....

My office in my basement has a collection of posters from Star Trek. I have a ton of models and toys... I have the original Series Enterprise, the New Next Gen movie Enterprise, a Borg cube, Klingon D7 Battle Cruiser, and Voyager models... I also have other sci-fi stuff as well... I have pics of my office here:
    mrjoeliec.com - Basement Build

I'm starving for a good Star Trek Fix.... I have checked them all out... A good Novel comes out every once in a while... There is a group who have been putting out an episode a year and they are not that bad... been getting better:
Star Trek: Phase II Home Page
They have been getting guest appearances by original cast members and in addition David Gerald and D.C. Fontana have been writing scripts for them.

Cast Members from both Voyager and DS9 have gotten together with Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols to create a movie.. Part one has already been released and it's an alternate time line of "What If" Kirk had been killed storyline:
Star Trek: Of Gods and Men

The cast is really impressive and in creating the link I just noticed Part 2 is now available so I have something to watch for lunch now....

But right now I have been clinging to British Sci-fi... As a child I watched Doctor Who and have been watching the new series... Also, the new Battlestar Galactica is very well done... There is also a spin-off of Doctor Who as well and it's kind of like an X-files show called Torchwood I enjoy that as well...

That's all I got...you got me rambling on my other passion besides motorcycles and computers....

I think we can all learn a little something from the original Star Trek.

I love Star Trek! Ok that said...........

The writing for TOS was pretty good for the time period as has been stated. I agree that at least the NBC, CBS, or who the heck ever killed the show as they usually do, with budget cuts and time-slot moves. However, TOS had some ground breaking moments such as the first interacial kiss and the casiting of an African-American as a main character. Also, many of the shows storylines had something to do with what was happening in the world at that time.

TNG: Slow start, but yeah, some of the best story lines written and I think probably my most fav out of them all

DS9: I didn't much care for it at first as to me it was not Star Trek. It never boldly went anywhere. UNTIL........they started going through the wormhole and other races came to the Alpha Quadrant. And then it got really good with the Dominion War. That realy got my interest and I think some really great writing came out of that. I must say though that I do have box sets of the other seasons. Season 7 only just got by and had a few good episodes, but the finale, imo, sucked.

Voyager: ranks almost up there with TNG. While not the first female captain (there was a female captain in TNG as well as Dr. Crusher was a captain in 'All Good Things'), it was the first time a female had been cast in the primary role. I am glad they finally went with Kate Mulgrew as Kate Bujould can't act on TV worth a slip of gold pressed latinum. Don't believe me, get season 1 of voyager and watch the scenes they included.

Finally, Enterprise: A good start, not quite slow, but character development was going on too. What hurt this show the most, imo, is the roaming time-slot. It had a strong slot on Wednesday, then the network moved it to Friday, into a time-slot competing with shows that already had a strong following (and probably followed by some Trek fans too). I think this is what really killed Enterprise. The best season is where they went into the Expanse, and then some of the next season. I just think more could have been done, but by this time, I think Trek writers were running out of steam and needed a break.

But, I love Trek, so it's all good. Oh, I think it should be noted that it has been said the original Trek and Gene Roddenberry's ideas for this show were really ahead of their time and the Gene was a visionary in that respect. I give him much props for creating something that can give some of us hope for the future of man, no matter how far fetched the idea of man living and working together, as in Trek, may seem.

    Live Long and Prosper!

I agree 100 percent. but by todays standards some of the writing is just horible. some episodes they are compleetly rediclous. they have this huge ordeal and will nnot survive. and at the last moment some all powerfull being will show up and fix everything in the last 2 minutes of the show. In my poinion there were too many all powerfull beings in the storyline. but that is just my opinion. over all i still enjoy it 5 days a week.

the only one i watched continually till now was voyager. though it always seemed like janway was so eger to risk her crew. its amazing the storyline got any of the crew.

i didnt see the end much. though all of the time travel stuff looked a little confusing.

oh. and it ticked me off when they had tuvok show emotion when nelix left. what the heck. the whole basis of vulcans is they do not show emotion.

    what the heck.

A little tough on poor Tuvok, my understanding from being a long term moderate Startrek fan is Vulcan emotion suppression is a learn't forced thing otherwise Vulcans would be aggressive like their blood Kin the Romulans.

If memory serves Tuvok was initially attracted to join the Star fleet academy after other Vulcans spurned him because of his unstability as a teenager after feeling an "unnatural" affection for a daughter of another species, his continual angst in Voyager was due to his quest to perfect himself as a Logical Vulcan.

Maybe the lone ranger but I liked Enterprise and was disappointed in its canning, my favourite episodes being those that filled in History to some of the Original series one dimensional species like the Orions.

have to say i prefer the first series with Shatner, Nimoy and co. I grew up with this so really all after are imitators IMO. having said that jean luc picard did grow on me.
    i love all those old one liners too;

"she cannae take it any more Cap'n ' ( Im usually thinking this one when hard on the brakes deep into a corner...Lol )

or spocks ' thats illogical captain' and of course bones ' its worse than that hes dead jim'

great stuff, still enjoy watching the reruns. :blah:

John is correct. Vulcan's learn to suppress their emotions in favor of logic because of their extremely violent history.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I had met Walter Koenig and James Doohan. Both were very nice gentlemen and very personalbe. When I met Walter Koenig, my g/f at the time worked for Subway, which the actors were eating for lunch. We saw him as he left and querried us as to our exit. I had to go to work and we could not stay any longer. But he did say maybe he'd see us around sometime. Yeah, like I'll ever get to meet him again and him remember. Hell that was 15 years ago. lmao. But as I said, both were really nice gentlmen.

I also have met David Prowse (Darth Vader) and the man who play Don West in the original Lost in Space, Gwenyth Walsh (Lursa from TNG). All very nice people, indeed. And man is David Prowse tall.

That would be very cool, in a fantasy date which of these Star Trek characters would you most like to go out with, T'Pal after taking Trellium D or Torres during her Pon Farr ?
