Hello folks, I have a '98 VFR800i. What is the best and easiest way to secure my baby? I visit different neighbourhoods throughout the day. johnc
In all honestly, good insurance.... ...besides that....chaining it to a immovable object thru the forks or rear tire and chain. Buy like the New York Kryptonite Chain Lock. Pretty hard to beat that in a short amount of time without an oxy-acetylene torch. As the old adage goes, if a thief wants your bike, they are gonna get it no matter what...all you can do it make it harder less appealing for them to do so. Park it off the street whenever you can, park in front of a car in a parking spot. Also, a bike alarm with a remote paging system would be a good investment as it would tell YOU if someone F's with your bike. Figure that 3-4 strong guys are gonna try and pick it up and throw it in a van/truck, so think of ways to make it harder for them to do so. Park in visible spots with lots of people....however, this doesn't always work...they steal in broad daylight with people around as well. Disc locks are kinda BS, as they will most likely being lifted up your bike, not riding it. Cable locks are easy cheesy to cut. Just some ideas for ya to consider.
Derstuka has some great advice, ultimately your best bet is to get full coverage insurance. I don't know where you go but if you're paying a visit to houses you could ask them if you can park your bike in their garage. If not, at least ask them if you can park on the entrance/porch to the door. That will at least make a thief think twice before stealing your bike since it's right in front of the house instead of on a driveway. On a related subject if you ever want to go on a trip and have to spend a night at a hotel find one that has doors on the outside and the sidewalk is low enough to get your bike over it. Then just roll your bike in your hotel room. You can't get much better security than that. :amen:
The next best thing after full coverage insurance is LoJack. Spend the money and know if you walk out and it's gone you should have it back in a couple hours.
Or its bigger brother KOJACK, to stand guard over it....... Just have to pay him in Lollipops
Duct tape and super glue. lol. j/k I use a disk lock myslef. So far it apears no one has messed with it. But what D said is pretty good. see? he can come up with a good idea sometimes. j/k D.
I use a New York noose chain to a bunch of old U locks embedded in my garage floor at home. I generally carry a disc lock. Realistically the only thing you can protect your bike from in public is a casual thief. Anyone with any organization will have two people and a couple of 2x4's. Pull a van up, pick the bike up with the boards, drive away. As a (slight) upgrade to my disc lock I've been thinking about getting one of the Athena disc locks with a motion alarm built in to the lock itself. LoJack is expensive. You can get alarm systems with GPS tracking, but they're expensive too. I just try to make my bike more annoying to steal than the bike on the next block. I'm not sure how much good locking the real on our bike it very effective - it'd be pretty easy to take the bike and leave the wheel (and 4 lugnuts)
Chaining it down sounds like good advice, reminded me of this video. YouTube - Honda CBR600RR 2007 STOLEN!
That video is proof positive why people suck & it should be perfectly legal to shoot them in the face with a hollow point .357 magnum. KC-10 FE out... lane: :usa2:
it seems like those guys would nearly have to be caught after sitting there for 3 minutes... it seemed long watching it, but I guess that's really not that long... once they decided to get it, it was gone in 20 seconds....
I got paranoid just taking a leak today at the gas station leaving my GPS and tank bag on after seeing this!
Hey, I'm from NJ. If you want me to kneecap someone... Would you prefer metal or wood? Baseball bats that is. What bothers me the most, is that NO ONE said or did anything. Not a person even batted an eye. KC-10 FE out... lane: :usa2:
