Need Advice from the Pro.

Okay, I did order the kit (Chain & Spocket) from the place Vlad recommended. I have a local guy looking at my chain and he said my chain (DID 530 ZVM2 xring) still good and he recommended to replace the front and rear sprockets, change out the masterlink on the chain and that should be good for while. I replace this chain last year and I did put in about 20k miles. Bases on the warranty the chain should last at least 2years. At this point my chain is made a lot of noise when riding and I made adjustment to the point there is about 1" slack at one area and up to 2" in some area. Is it because my rear sprocket wont out un even? Please advise

 

2 years? I don't know about you but the way you ride makes a big difference in how the chain wears out. My chain lasted about 7 months and I'll probably have to replace it every 6-8 months because I do like a spirited ride.

I have a friend who had a CB1000 (what a torque monster!) and he had a chain that lasted only 2 months. YMWV (Your Mileage Will Vary)

As for the sprockets the teeth shouldn't look like pointy teeth. If the teeth are looking sharp and can cut you it's time to replace the sprocket.

 

If you have up to 2" of slack, the chain is WAY too loose.

You may be able to make the chain last up to two more years but it will eat any sprockets you put on there. You may not be able to make it out with the naked eye but the chain is worn & it will imprint this wear pattern on any sprocket it's wrapped around.

I would recommend just spending the $$$ now & getting a full kit. Chains are only suppossed to last about 12-15 anyway.

Worn sprockets will make a new chain wear faster. But in the long run, it may be better to replace all three at the same time so that they wear together. I know a guy who just changed a sprocket and not the set and he literally ate up two sprockets and broke the chain before he finally replaced both the sprockets and the chain.

 

I have always read/heard to change sprokets and chain at same time to allow all to wear uniformly

 

As you have already ordered he kit, I would recommend you replace all 3 items together. 20,000 miles ain't bad, not bad at all. As for the local guy, well his opinion is an interesting one - does he own a bike? If the chain has a tolerance of +/- 1 inch... it's time to replace.

Hmm, did I notice you mentioning master link? Hmm as thy ain't any on avfr that I know of, unless you are calling the one riveted the master, which it is, but you'll need a chain breaker or like me a die grinder, and press to put her back together. yea man 1" in one spot 2" in another is an indication you need a new chain and hell ya, get sprockets too.

I spend all Saturday to working on the bike, Remove and replace the front, rear and the chain. I also took a lot of pictures during my project to create a hand on instruction and hopefully can help other out on the VFR world. I took her to work this morning and Men what a diffrent...............She ride like a rocket, Smooooooooooooth no noise, I love it. I did not want to be agressive with her since I am not sure how she will respond to with the new sprockets and chain. Anyway Thanks you all for the inputs have a great week
