I picked up a new to me 3rd Gen VFR and just completed going through it before putting it on the road, Valve clearance check, upgraded charging system and wiring, coolant, oil filter, cleaning etc... Putting it back together now. When I took it apart these rubber panels where just hanging of the frame.

    Question. What are they for?
    Where/how are they installed?

    Thanks

I have a 5th gen, but a couple of them look a little like the rubber pieces I have under the back end of the tank and above the rear shock with the hole for hoses or wires... Sorry not much help, but since I replied, the thread will be bumped again and maybe someone with a 3rd gen will see it and know what they are for sure...

I had to come back and edit this cause the more I look at them, the less I think I know what they are at all... The pieces I have are more just flat pieces or rubber. That one on the far right, was the battery box up against it or something? Those rubber dealies sticking up look like fasteners of some sort... Wonder if there was some type of luggae that was removed and the pads weren't. Quite the mystery you have there when I have never looked at a 3g bike up close. :)

I just scanned through my digital '90-'97 Servive Manual in an attempt to see if these were called out anywhere as something specific. They weren't. :frown:

I assume they go on the inside of the frame rail to direct hot air that has passed through the radiator out the vents on the side of the bike. My guess is that the round cut outs near the top go around the radiator hoses.

I know there is a bunch of similar rubber stuff on my 4G. My guess is that they are not critical, but probably should be re-installed.

I don't know what the smaller one in the center does, it's pretty unfamiliar looking.

Every time I take something apart, and put it back together again, I have thingys left over. Now I have a huge box of thingys in the garage. I have never taken anything off my VFR which is probably a good thing in my case. Hope you find what you're looking for. But I cannot help.

You know, it might be part of the saddle on the front fender. See my avatar for clarification!:lever:

    Rubbers

These are internal air dams to direct hot air AWAY from critical components like battery, Reg/rec, as well as directing cooler outside air into areas like the air box inlets on the sides, separate from radiator air.

I BELIEVE they are helpful, in general, at least.

    What he said...

IMHO these do help somewhat. They are like a rubber barrier between the critical components and the frame/engine...which get quite hot!!!

You notice that some of them have round peices that hold your hoses/wiring harness....thats what they do.
Some go through the openings, while others are just clipped on.

***The one with the loop on the end is a must****
This loop holds the charging section of the wiring harness
    (R/R & battery wiring)
The rubber is placed on little hooks or tabs that should be on the right tail section of the frame. This piece goes between the wiring and the frame or battery box I believe.

I'll take a few pics for you of my 3rd Gen (1993) when I get home and post'em up so you can see how they are set up on the bike.

    Hope this explains it.

What A Pain In The A$$

Yes, they are. Right and left rubber air dams on each side of the fairing to direct air into the air box. Curls around frame and forms a U under the side fairing.

    Thanks for all the reply's,

The centre one looked to me like it went around the battery area also but when I took to bike apart it was hanging by the small rectangular hole at the top from a tab on the bottom left corner of the radiator, I don't know how it managed to stay on. The other 2 had been hanging from one of the push buttons in holes on each side of the frame.

Thanks Pearl-93 some photos sure would help.
