I have this habit of covering my bike whenever it is out sitting in the sun (not moving) for more than an hour or so. I use my Nelson-Rigg UV half-cover each day at work, as I want my baby's paint to look purty for years to come. I have full covers at home of course, but this UV half cover is just so light and compact it works great and it easy to carry wherever I go in my backpack. I took a couple of pictures this morning outside of work with my cell.

Does anybody use a cover whenever their bike sits outside at work?

Yep, I have to pull it down and shield the carbon fiber exhaust from those bad UV rays!

    Nice.

Mine has to sit in the shade of trees but they have their own bad effects (pollen, birdscat, etc). I always wanted one of those stretchy lycra covers (GEZA???) because they crumble up so small but the price is outrageous; over $100 I think. Employers should be more bike friendly and build us some covered parking to keep our bikes out of the sun and the rain while we toil away. It would promote moto-commuting!

Nope. it sits out there under the sun getting a nice tan.
The seat is HOT sometimes when I need to go out for lunch.

I dunno guys. I mean the sun is no harder on our steeds than on a car. Mine stays out in the elements un-covered in darkness and full sun, rain wind and even sometimes snow. This has been close to two years now and the finish shows no ill effects (from the weather anyways) Having said that, a few things to consider.

Mine is white and will be less effected by the sun. Black and red are probably the worst colours for oxidization.

The climate here in the Vancouver area is nowhere near as harsh (sun wise) as you brothers have down in the lower extremities to the USA.

But I have thought about it in the past, and may change my mind. I have changed my mid in the past. I just can't remember what I changed it to. Something in a pickling jar I think.

I recommend the Nelson-Rigg Half cover, as I only spent like $35 bucks on it. it is very small and compact. It has about 4 elastic hold-down straps as well. The Geza is nice, but one thing about covers that are really tight is that the pull back and mess up your mirrors most everytime that you put them on. I might sound like I am bitching, but resetting your mirrors everytime sucks.

    sorry, no sportbike pic

Yeah, SoCal has some intensely hot sun rays burning down about 90% of the time...plus it helps keep dust/debris off of it.

Oh, and my baby is 10 years old, and people still comment that it looks brand new. You have an '06, so yours is pretty new still. To each his/her own I know.

I don't put it on if I stroll into the store for a few minutes, but if it sits outside all day in the sun, my baby is gonna have some love & protection!

Does mamma know about this infliction you have. But you are right. A very close look at mine and you see the spider scratches. But that isn't weather related. More to do with contact between clothing and tank. And I really highly doubt I will have mine as long as you. The miles are just racking up on mine so I am even looking at a replacement for spring of 2009. Think I will sell this one while the mileage is such that I can get some money for it. I can't run it into the ground, as I sort of "depend" on it for transportation. Otherwise it costs me about $40.00 round trip in the battle ship when commuting to and from work....each day!:jaw:

Yep, it is nice when people comment that the thing looks like new. People used to say that about my "92 Jimmy....at lest they did until I gave it to my son. He has different priorities. My memory tells me he did wash it though last year:pout:

No, but I park it under the front ceiling of the building I work in when I ride to work.

Otherwise its in the garage, unless riding somewhere else!

My bike gets the same consideration as our helicopter. It gets hangar-tized at work, garage at home(the wife's car has to sit out in the carport).

I pretty much ride the bike to work everyday from spring to late fall, unless it's raining. I work third shift, so I started to use a Dowco Guardian cover to keep the morning dew off the bike. I got tired of wiping it off, and a another benefit was how much longer the bike stays clean, a lot less dirt and dust settles on it. I have a garage so it's always in there during the day when I'm home.

    D,
I've got the same cover. Do you have to let the exhaust cool before you put the cover on? I know you have CF pipes but they still get pretty hot right? I got my cover with the idea of covering the bike at work but I'm worried about melting the cover on the pipes.

My bike is too tough, too beautiful, and ridden too often for a cover. I also can park on the North side of the building in a spot that gets direct sun only late in the afternoon when the sun is lower. She sleeps in her own room when we get home.

Your cover looks nice on your bike - breaking up all that red into red, black and silver, kinda like red, white, and blue, but not quite as nice to my eye

Yeah Action, I either put the cover on fully and leave it off the exhaust area (I have side exhaust though) until it cools and come back out 30 mins later, or I just wait 30 mins and put it on them...either/or. I would not recommend putting it over the exhaust until it cools some, or as you expect, it will probably melt. Pretty much any cover would be the same for the most part.

How do you like the cover? I think for the money ($35 bucks) and compactness, you can't go wrong.

I really like the cover. The couple of times I've made over night trips on the bike it worked great. I also use it in the winter to keep dust off the bike in the garage. I'm going to give it a try at work tomorrow. I'm thinking the same as you, I'll give it 30 minutes or so to cool and then put it on. I really wanted it for the summer, the bike seat gets really hot when it's a buck ten outside.

Yeah, and just imagine mean ole Mr. Sun blasting down all of his nasty harmful UV rays on your bikes purty paint as it sits there all day, all alone..... I think it will really benefit you, as you get even more powerful sunshine than I!

My VFR gets to spend its down time in a locked storage area went I ride to work.
If you don't cover your bike you should at least put a covering ,a towel , or something over the gauges.
I had the sun fade the paint on my needles on my last bike.

I'm more nervous about dirt, dust, etc getting on the surface edges of the cover and scrathing the paint everytime I would take it off and on. But that's just me.

I used to cover mine then I noticed fine scratches from the cover after it got a little older so I just quit messing with it. Now my bike sits out in the sun at work or in the garage if I'm at home... of course the fine scratches may have been something else. there is no tellin with me. I'm pretty rough on my bike, but that's why I bought a honda. they are known to hold up well or so I'm told...
