Motorcycle / scooter only traffic lanes and free parking would be a good start. But since motorcycles get better mileage than cages, take up less real estae, and contribute only a negligable amount to roadway and infrastructure wear and tear, how about tax free gasoline? Now that would be an incentive to get more people out of cages and on bikes. Yes, I am sometimes a dreamer.

Same thing with Oregon and Washington. Portland is full of crazy bicyclists though, who routinely pull out in front of cars and get pissed when someone hits them. I could see idiots on motorcycles doing the same thing if there was lanes just for them, and they had to cross over.

Out here near D.C. they allow motorcyclists and hybrid cars to use the HOV lanes. But that does not help much, since there are so many bottleneck points. I wish to GOD they'd allow lane splitting. I've heard horror stories of pissed off cagers. But on a 90 degree day in gridlock, I'll take my chances!

In California and San Francisco, you can:

    1. Lane split (at reasonable speeds)
    2. Ride in the HOV lanes
    3. Find plenty of parking (in downtown SF) at motorcycle meters ($2 a day)

In CA and San Francisco in particular, you cannot:
    1. Park on the sidewalk
    2. Ride in bicycle lanes
    3. Ride without a helmet (on your head)

These rules make it easy to commute in the Bay Area. I am a daily commuter and have commuted via motorcycle for over ten years.

To get better motorcycle traffic access, the first step in the right direction is allowing lane splitting. No extra street pavement is needed. CA passed the law, but the trade off to allowing lane splitting was a manditory helmet law.

Yay hope it catches on now the Spanish have taken a step in the right direction with Motorcycle areas in front of traffic at lights.... :strong:

    From Motorbiker.org:

" Those Spaniards are very motorcycle friendly, and progressive thinking. The authorities have started placing special areas in front of traffic lights for motorcycles.

These areas will allow bikes to go to the front and have an area reserved for motorcycles, the way some countries do for bicycles. It's a much safer way to start from a light for motorcycles, and cars will not be hindered, since as we all know, motorcycles accelerate faster than cars.

Barcelona was the first to install a special box for motorcycle, between the white "stop" line and the pedestrian crossing. "

Well that's one for the Spaniards. What a sensible decision. Not likely here as the current regime is quite anti-motorbike and actually anti anything that goes faster than 10km/hr. Talk about 'Big Brother', it's here in West Australia.
