Why they protest the torch being carried across the world instead of protesting China and China only. The torch does not represent China, it represent the Olympics. It's going to reach China regardless of what some people do. If you want to protest the actions against the Tibetian citizens go and protest in front of the Chinese Embassy and the UN. Leave the torch alone!

While not agreeing with the protester's interfering with the torch think they should be ok to calmly hold up posters to the worlds press filming its progress to highlight their situation, if they did it in China like other protest groups they would dissappear from public only to re-appear as body parts for the worlds rich. :frown:

Leave the damned politics out of the Olympics. Seems almost every Olympiad now is getting hampered by political garbage. This is an armature sporting event. I only wished that when I was younger I had it in me to try for this.

    Hey John:

Back in 97 I was interning with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and we had a chinese triad gang member who was here illegally. Apparently certain countries do not want their criminals back or when they take them back they disappear. Anyway we got to talkingand I asked him if he will ever go back to China or wishes he could serve his time out their. His basic answer was no way! He talked about what jails and prison was like in his home country and it was no joke. He laughed at American inmates who claimed our system was unfair. He had some nightmare stories as it was and finished out with rumors of inmates being used for organ harvesting back then!

At the time I didn't not believe him, but it was like something out of a horror movie.

He was one of the more interesting inmates I was around thats for sure.

I know if people protest in China, they'll get killed, It's a communist country. That's why I said the Embassies(As long as the protesters stay outside the Embassy grounds it's OK) and the UN. The signs are OK! Putting the torch out? :nono:

Protesting, I don't care really, but when they try and extinguish it I don't care for too much. They are really going nuts up in San Fran preparing for protest rallies.

San Francisco is their own little world. Everything is different there. Maybe they should have brought the torch through San Diego. All the stoners and Parrot Heads would never even have noticed.

I think the last true amature olympics was in 80...maybe 84...the rest are infused with professional athletes.

The 1980 Moscow Olympic's which were boycotted by the USA as a political protest ?

Truth is due to the Olympics global press coverage nearly every modern Olympics has attracted some kind of protest lobby, with our 2000 Australian games it was the Indiginous Aborigine's , '92 Spanish Olympics it was the Basque separatists, with the '68 Mexico it was Black Power, with '96 Atlanta is was the Olympic Park Bomber, with '72 Munich it was the Palestinian terrorists....

Dosn't make it right but besides the Soccer World cup the Olympics is the most watched Sporting event so will attract all sorts of attention, get rid of the torch's press coverage and most of the protesters will be defused.

Slightly off topic, think the Olympics has become too big and should get rid of some of the silly events that don't make sense to its spirit....

The Communist government of the Peoples' Republic of China is using the Oylmpics as a political symbol, an indication that China is a full-fledged member of the developed world and that its government has legitimacy on the international stage. The torch relay is one of China's stage props in that political theater. It is a symbol of China's desire for worldwide acceptance. So, opponents of China's policies politicize the torch, too. It attracts protesters of all kinds - Tibetan nationalists, opponents of China's support for the genocidal government of Sudan, critics of China's dismal human rights record at home, critics of its woeful environmental performance, you name it. What's so hard to understand about that? I think the protests are effective. The protestors have every right to use the torch as a symbol of China's bad conduct nationally and internationally, particularly because China is using it to play politics too.

I wasn't talking about the political protests.....I was referring to the athletes themselves. Now professional athletes compete in the olympics. So there are no amatuers.

I couldn't agree more John. IMHO....if I was king shit, I would eliminate any games which could not be measured by some means. No more events that have subjective performance judging....such as gymnastics, diving, water ballet, etc...there is always a BIG controversy each Olympic games as someone's team/fans/country doesn't think that they were rated high enough and the judges were biased or something. If you can time it, measure it by placing, measure the distance/height/length, etc, it would be good to me....otherwise, shitcan it! :lever:

...oh, and there should be a limit of catagories, as there is waaaaaaaaay too many events as it is!

Slightly off topic unless you intend to head out and protest it during the torch relay ?

On the amateur vs professional topic, while my heart agree's with you but my selfish television viewing side wants to see the " very best " in the world compete against each other, that they are paid professionals matters naught to it.

My turn to agree 100% with you if it can't be measured finitely then turf it, unfortunately my missus likes that subjective flowery rubbish like Rhythmic gymnastics so I'm doomed to watch it also :frown: ....
