For those of you who have been following the sordid tale of my first day with my Veefer will recall that within 60 klicks of picking it up from the dealer we abruptly parted company.

I won’t go into details as it is too painful to recount but it felt like I had thrown acid in Beyonce’s face.

Basically after the “fall” I brought her home, threw a cover over her, and went into the house and poured myself a stiff single malt. Followed quickly by two more.

After a week of avoiding eye contact with her I got up the nerve to peek under the cover and saw, that guess what, she’s not as badly molested as I first thought. Took 5 minutes to replace the right-side mirror and brake lever and applied some scratch remover and, hey, not too bad! A little touch up paint of the three or four nicks and I don’t think you could tell she had ever been dropped from 5’ out!

Time to ride and get better acquainted. Gingerly out the drive, watch out for a winters-worth of sand and we’re on our way. 30 minutes rolling and what’s this, a kid in a Corolla (a Corolla?!) on my ass? Hmmm, straight road, pretty clean, no traffic except for this ditz on my tail let’s see what happens if you crack the throttle in 4th on this baby (recall that my last ride was an ’04 Shadow Spirit).

HOLY CRAP! This is what it must be like for a shuttle pilot watching the launch pad disappear in his rear views!! 80 to 135 kph in about a heartbeat and ½. If I hit a speed trap now I’m dead. Close the throttle and grab some brake. Hey I didn’t mean come to a dead stop now!

Okay, so there’s a steep learning curve here for me but we’re figuring this out together. Let it at least be said that we got home after a couple of hundred klicks safe and sound and this time celebrated with a single malt.

Remember the Ewok and land speeder scene in starwars where the little guy is hanging on and his feet are flapping in the wind behind him? That's the image that came to mind the first time I opened her up and it took off.

    Shadow,
Glad to hear you looked her in the eyes and took her out for a spin!
Fun, isn't it? I've got a Red 2003 Spirit in my garage as well, and they are two totally different animals! Watch out for the VFR, you can get into trouble quickly! The Spirit is a much more forgiving bike, but the Viffer is MUCH MORE FUN!
Have a great time and be safe!

Welcome to the club and I'm glad you got back in the saddle. I was a little nervous bringing my VFR home that first night, but I got over it quickly. Now I am just totally impressed about how comfortable, balanced and how much performance the bike has. And let me second that recommendation to get the bike to a curvy road sooner than later! Take it easy first and read some books or watch some videos on how best to corner and pick a correct line through a corner, but after you've got the confidence let'er rip. I'm still amazed as to how the VFR handles the twisties. It's not a light bike, but it sure does make taking the corners fun.

congrats man, on my night home from the dealership after everything was signed (title and stuff) a truck spilled 1/2 inch steel piping all over the freeway. I thought that was the end of my bike as the front tire started to slip as i was slowing down, I didnt drop it but I was damn close

xShadowrider, good to hear the damage wasn't as bad as you thought. Enjoy the ride, it gets better the longer you're on it.

Happy to hear all's well and that you're experiencing the same thing I did this weekend on my black 06, mainly on the Trans-Canada from home through Petawawa and Pembroke. Over 6300 rpm is "interesting" for a newbie on this machine. Wow.

I pulled into a parking area to adjust the GPS and the local constabulary cruised in for a look. They can't see my face because I have a dark smoke visor on a full-face helmet. They provided a friendly nod in response to mine, and kept on going. Just wanted a curious look at the machine, I guess, or wondering if I'm a hot blond chick on a hot black bike. Not the former, definitely the latter.

Did I mention that the black 06 is faster than the white 06?

I think those who have black bikes spent too much time polishing the scratches out of them to really know if the are faster than a Pearly Baby. Scratches don't show on white.

And yah Shadow. When I got mine in July 06 (first time on a bike really) and opened it up for the first time, I thought htat there was a nuke that went off between my legs. Had a nervous pee I did. Expelled a little methane too.
