After next week I will finally be fully legal.
I have never had a "M" endorsement on my license before & it all started summer before last. I bought a '03 Ninja 750 while the wife was off on a trip to Europe... Long story short I got cut off in traffic 4 days later and totaled the bike. No license, Tags were the previous owners but legal for 30 days in Tennessee, & I had insurance but no proof. The cop took it easy on me & I got over with the judge (The county judge works on the "good ole boy system")... SOooo I took my settlement money from the wreck and bought my 87 VFR and a 91 F150. I ran the rest of that season and up until July last year on the illegal Ninja tags until they expired and still no license... I Know I'm pushing my luck... So Christmas money bought my tags and taxes. I take my rider course this weekend so I can get my license AND I got insurance today. YEA!!!! No more worrying about the man sticking it to me unless I'm doing something stupid.:vtr2:

I'm really looking forward to the class. After talking with them they recomended the Exp Rider Course since I've got several thousand miles under my belt.

Congrats pontiacformula99, I too am looking at taking the msf next week, although I do already have my class M endorsement I am looking forward to it. The last time I took it was 17 years ago, interested to see whats changed since then. Im planning on being totally legal to ride there to it. Good luck!

It AMAZES me how many riders do not have that "M" on their license. It is easy kids! Even I could do it! Our local Policia sometimes hang out on the popular roads and pull riders over and sweep their bikes into trucks for IMPOUNDEMENT when they do not have the license! Just do it!

Senor Yoda! Digame no esta verdad! Por favor!!

Seriously...it is easy and if you get stopped it is more trouble that you can avoid.

A simple written test and a simple road test (that I know you will pass). :third: Esta muy facil!

I know man! I know! People here tells me that It's easier to get the basic motorcycle safety course and TXDOT will waive the road test with the course cetificate. I just have to take the written test. I'm waiting to get enough dinero to pay the course ($200.00) and I'm studying the book for the written test. The Army is supposed to pay for the basic course, but my Command will only pay the advance courses (@ holes), still my Lt. is checking the issue out to see if they pay my basic. :noidea:

I know if you get caught with no license or just a permit they impound the bike for a minimum 30 days, which is a grand + in and of itself to get your bike out.

No wonder they do those STING operations! They make LOTS of money that way!

Most dealerships won't let you test ride bikes without a M license too...

And I do have to say that it doesn't take nearly as long to receive a speeding ticket by the side of the road when your paperwork is in order. Herd 'em in, herd 'em out, rawhide!

    Yoda,

I don't know how it works in the Army, but the Air Force offers an MSF approved course on most (all?) bases for free. I know if you don't show up they charge you, but if you attend you don't pay anything. Have you checked into anything like that? I was going to look into taking the advanced course, but I don't know if they offer that on base. I think around here you have to pay out of pocket for that one.

The written test in Montana was a total joke. It was 25 questions and you could miss four. If you look over the packet the night before, you'll do more than fine. Really, I think most of the questions are common sense. Good luck on getting "legal."

Same here, 25 ?'s. Well I heard that the only place close to get it on base is in Ft.Hood, and that's like 3hrs. away. I'll let Lt. work that out since he's trying to get his too. He can pull more strings than I. If not I'll pay it and get it over with.

Last summer on a long canyon ride hit a police road block in the middle of nowhere specifically for bikes, i was told 1 in 6 don't have an MC license. a Large flat deck full of bikes was looking real full.

 Damn IT! I got dismissed before the class even started today. The letter I recieve said that to take the course "You must have a registered, insured motorcycle, a DOT approved helmet, gloves, and over the ankle foot wear."

I had ALL of these things but got dismissed over a technicallity...
I just insured the bike this morning so I didn't have proof. They e-mailed my proof to my work e-mail which is my ONLY e-mail and I can't access that from home. I had my registration... They wouldn't even let me call Geico on my cell for proof.:frusty:

I don't usually carry proof, even on my cars. The instructor asked me what I would do if I got pulled over... SIMPLE, in Tennessee you have 3 days to produce proof to the County Clerk and it's dropped... PLUS I don't have a damn license so the insurance would be the least of my worries.

I have to call the lady who sets the classes up on Monday but I know she's gonna try to charge me the 50% reschedule fee of $50... I'me gonna try to talk her out of it since the letter didn't say "Have proof of registration & insurance"...

-MAN THIS SUCKS I was looking forward to being legal for a change. Oh well Sunny and 75 tomorrow I guess I'll be outlaw riding for a little while longer.:bolt:

Are you sure about this? I don't live in Tennessee but here the boys usually use dicretion and allow you time to produce, but it is not written so in the law.

As a foot note to this, and it applies to all your vehicles, usually all you are required to carry with you is a copy. Check with your DMV for sure. If that is the case, I would copy the original, white out your address, then copy the copy so that your address is not in your vehicle. What this does for you is that if someone breaks into your vehicle, they do not know where you live, enabling them to break into your home knowing you are not home. But again check with the requirements in your local jurisdictions.

Just a little Crime Prevention advise if you will.

you know...I thought it was easy also...but, there was a lady taking the test when I was there. she came over to talk to me after taking the test on my vfr and here's the conversation:

her: "So how many times did you touch your foot down?"

me: "none, they said you are not supposed to."

her: "yeah, but they'll allow you to a little if you need to."

    me: "ok."

her: "I only touched my foot down 3 times and they said I'd have to try again."

me: "you just took it on a scooter and touched your foot down?"

    her: "yeah."

    me:

    -------------------
maybe it's just me, but I was glad she did not get a motorcycle endorsement. if you are on a scooter and still have trouble with that test, you are a statistic waiting to happen IMO.

Hey, don't sweat it, I'll still ride with you tomorrow. Of course if you get stopped I have no idea who you are. "Honest officer, I just happened to be in front of this guy."
