I've been using a jumbo can of Golden Spectro O-Ring safe chain lube since I got my bike. I need something better.

My main problem is the stuff doesn't last at all, I'll maybe get 80 miles TOPS before the chain looks like it's dry again. What's more this stuff is a MESS, it has almost 0 fling resistance, if you looked at my rear fender, rim, etc. there's lines and splotches of lube everywhere; it literally defies physics and flings past my chain guard. Not to mention the stuff is really hard to apply evenly, even when it's warm out. As soon as any heat gets to it, the lube has the consistency of water.

I lubed it about 2 hours before I went out for a ride today, there is literally black chain lube CHARRING and SMOKING on my collector.

Though, in all fairness the sprocket is in a 'pocket' between the engine and various coverings, which probably traps a lot of heat when sitting (I live in San Diego, I sit a LOT).

Anywho, let's hear what you guys got. Sorry for the rant.

EDIT: Here's some pics of what I mean

    Pooled on the collector

Gets on my rim, gets on my tire which then......

    ...Flings onto my fender

I've been using Bel-Ray chain lube for the past year or so and love it. It goes on wet and dries to a film. It's white but I'm not sure if it's Teflon or something else, but it works very well. I spray my chains (both bikes) every couple of hundred miles and haven't had any problems in about 15,000 miles.

Wow! That doesn't look right, and your description of the lube properties sounds suspicious. It does tell you to shake it a whole bunch before applying, doesn't it? Sorry for the basic question...

I've tried a bunch of lubes, and currently use Motul Street. They all fling somewhat, but the Motul is not bad at all. PJ1 Blue Label wasn't bad either. The biggest problems I have had were either applying too much, or not waiting at least 20 minutes for the solvents to evaporate, but the chains never got dry as in your description. Does it LOOK dry, or is it dry to the touch?

The Bel Ray already mentioned is awesome stuff. If not, Pro Honda in the red & black can works great to. You want to look for one that is described as a chain wax.

Quite stupidly, Honda recommends 90W gear oil. If you like washing your bike with de-greaser...

    KC-10 FE out...

The lube sat on there for about 2 hours before I road, I don't think solvents are the problem. I did go a little lube happy, I'll admit, but if I put any less only I don't think I'd get any more mileage out of it.

80 miles down the road it looks and feels dry. My guess is that the heat from the collector is heating it to the point where it drips/loosens, if it doesn't drip on the collector it's flung elsewhen.

    It feels and looks dry.

Try "Bel-Ray Superclean" chainlube. It WON"T sling off. The regular Bel-Ray will sling off but the Superclean dries to a white film and will stay on the chain for 100s of miles.

However, don't use it on your chain lighter. It'll come off all over the inside of your pocket (don't ask how I know).

Maxima Chain Wax.........Proven over many many miles both on, and offroad. Almost ZERO fling and has excellent longevity, even when it gets very hot. There aren't many products that can stand up to the abuse of desert racing, this is certainly one of them. No, I don't work or have sponsorship from Maxima.......

MCN did a comparo a couple years back of 20 or so brands, tested in multipl areas in a scientific way, overall that was the top rated

    Hey VFR,

I forget to mention. I always spray the lube on and let it sit for a few minutes, and then afterwards I spin the chain/tire and wipe off the excess with a rag. Usually once after that I have to wipe up some on the swingarm and near the shifter, but that is the story of "having and maintaining a messy drive chain." I use Honda's white lithium chain lube. Funbike Center has some for like $5.50. Seems to work pretty good. They all fling, but this seems to keep it lubed after several hundred miles.

I think I will go the lithium grease next time around.

lgn001 told me I have congealed lube build up underneath the guard and probably pooled under the coverings, when the fresh lube lands on it it sags and drips; it may all be a matter of cleaning. He's right, I just haven't been able to clean it up.

But, that still doesn't change the fact that the Golden Spectro just doesn't last.

As for FBC, I still go there to check out bikes/gear every once in a while, but I stopped giving them business after they refused to work on my bike because it's too old.

Have used Mortorex 622 Strong for a few years with good results, besides going on thick and not flinging also use the small travel spray can you fill from the big one which gives 2 lite sprays on tour.

Yes, LG had a good point. I had to do the same awhile back. I actually spray in there with a hose to blasted some of it out of there. A lot of shizzle can build up in there. If you are careful (I will get flamed for this because if you are not careful it can damage/dry out bearings and/or your chain) try using some high pressure water at the car wash to get that gunk out. Try not to directly (or using full pressure) shoot it at the chain as it can damage the O-rings.

I hear you on FBC pushing you away. Unfortunately, this is getting more and more common as many bike places have run into problems working old bikes, breaking parts, new replacements unavailable. I have heard of some places actually looking at your bike first and making that determination, but that is going away I think. A lot of places have it set at ten years old is their limit. Guess I am at the end of it now.

Cyclegear on Convoy has a good chain lube selection as well. They have some lithium based lubes when I was last in there. PJ1 is good stuff as well. I just never have been a fan of chainwax types and the way it building up and kinda hold extra sand and dirt (than a normal chain lube) in the chain. Others guys swear by chainwax. Pick your poison.

Yeah I like cycle gear, I got my gloves, reflective vest and other nik naks there.

As for not being able to get the gunk out, I meant I haven't been able to in the sense I haven't gotten around to it. I think I'm going to go do that right now; when I kill the engine now the smell of burnt gunk is getting stronger.

My God, I'm amazed, we agree on something. Nothing better IMO and I've tried a whole lot of them. Maxima chain wax is where it's at.

+ 1 on the Pro Honda lube, I've probably used it for 10 years +. Its got Teflon and Moly in it. Clean your chain spray it on, let it dry. No sling off stuff. I get about 20k on my chains. Super Stuff.

I like MOTUL chain lube. It sticks like PJ-1 but is clear. I only lube the rollers, and let it sit for 30+ minutes before riding. When the chain starts looking dirty, I clean it with WD-40 and re-oil it.
