Oh, I see how it is...

YOU can't type or speak English to even a remotely 5th grade standard but I'M the stupid one? Sorry pinhead, your logic is faulty & I'm fairly certain I'm not the only one who holds this opinion.

Do the world a favor & piss off.

Hey 'Stuka, can you ban this idiot since it's quite clear he doesn't do anything other than piss people off?

I'm in full agreement with Derstuka. If you want to stop the oil companies from constantly raising prices on fuel for apparently no reason, support alternative fuels and their advancement. That is the worst thing you could do to oil companies...that and not supporting wars fueled by greed for someone else's oil reserves. With the election coming up, keep your distaste for oil companies in mind and vote for someone who wants to advance green technology rather than line their own pockets.

The problem with using "alternative" sources is for the most part, they are a sham.

Look at E85. It has been scientifically proven that E85 has less energy content per gallon than gasoline. That means that ANY vehicle it's used in will get less MPG. It costs more to produce. It is not commonly available except for certain states. So, this "alternative" energy source makes zero sense. If it was cheaper, people would be all over it.

Look at diesels. I wanted to purchase a GMC2500 DuraMax/Allison. Now, I have no need for a truck that can tow 13K on the tag or 17K on a 5th wheel. I wanted it because the GMC2500 would get about 22MPG as oppossed to 15.5MPG that my POS Ford F-150 gets. It also is ridiculously overpowered for everyday use. Why didn't I buy it? It was $42K for the only one I could find that I would actually buy. Now, if one were to do the math, my monthly cash output would increase about $250 just to own this vehicle. This does not take into account the increased service cost that diesels have either. Simply put, it didn't make sense to purchase this truck.

Look at the Toyota Prius. It costs in the neighborhood of $27k when commonly equipped. I know 3 people that own one. All 3 say they never see more than 40MPG. Couple that to the fact it has less range than any equivalent car, it make absolutely zero sense to purchase one. You can get a Honda Civic that gets about 36MPG for $16k.

Look at wind power. Makes alot of sense, right? Too bad the Greenie fuktards say they destroy the environment & block their construction. They wanted to install a windfarm in the swamps around Atlantic City, NJ. The Greenie's went to court to block it. 5 indiviual turbines were built before the court order was issued.

Look at solar cells. I'm putting a new roof on my house in the next few years. I want to install the solar cells on my house when I do. What's the problem? The cheapest I can find to have it done is about $31k. Sorry, I would love to do this but $31k is almost a full year's base pay for me.

Everyone says Americans are spoiled when it comes to cheap energy. That may be true but you simply can't quadruple energy prices in less than 4 years & not expect backlash from the consumer public. I am almost universally against Government interference into personal affairs but in this case, Big Brother needs to crawl up Big Oil's butt with a micro scope. After they discover what EVERYONE already knows, people need to go to prison.

Since the primary issue is greed, and greed does not seemed to be perceived as an unbalanced state of mind, there is little to nothing that can be done, from a consumption point of view, to combat it.

There are people on this planet that will never have enough material possessions, or enough "power" that comes from material wealth, to satisfy their desire for more. And unfortunately, for most of us anyway, we are minor consumers, and have absolutely no leverage whatsoever.

And before the flame wars begin, I, like most humans, am motivated by money. Partly for survival, partly for non-essential possessions, partly for whatever reasons that we are ALL motivated by it. I am fortunate enough not to be consumed by my desire.

Like all things having to do with humans, there are no easy answers. Our dependence on fuel, and electricity, has evolved from our desire to live more luxuriously. I'm not talking about Bentleys, champagne and super-models here; I am referring to not having to grow/hunt our own food, build a fire so we don't die, etc.

So before I rattle on for another several paragraphs on my view of the world (not that I would EVER consider doing that...), I'll just stop now.

Necessity is the mother of all invention. As of the current, there is no particular NEED for practical alternative fuels; America still (albeit grudgingly) shells out 3+ dollars a gallon because we don't want to change our lifestyles. How do I know we don't want to change? Price goes up, we grumble, groan and grimace, shaking our fists at those wretched oil mongers, yet we buy anyway in the same volume. We're really in a stockholm syndrome with oil companies.

I think our ultimate solution is going to be hydrogen. Water makes up most of the earth's surface after all. Hell, the ocean has water AND electrolyte (salt) already in it! The only thing needed to get energy from the ocean would be to pass electrical current through it (electrolysis). If you had solar panels providing that current, you'd have virtually free energy. However, the problem with hydrogen is that it's not in as handleable (it's a gas), doesn't have the energy density as gasoline and is rather hard to store. Once we pass those hurdles we're in the clear... but as of this moment, there's no exceptional drive to overcome those limitations.

When oil is all gone, we'll see the real epiphany of human innovation IMHO.

KC - the easiest way to deal with elf is found in Bubba Z's tag line.

I was not driving during the 74 (?) gas shortage with the lines at stations etc.... but it sucked... trying to get in line early, stations running out of gas. My buddy would pilfer gas from the Zamboni for his Plymouth Duster. That was when they started with locking gas caps and fuel doors to prevent syphoning.

It's even easier than that, since that's what the ignore feature is for. I looked at some of his other posts & this toolbox hasn't made a single solitary point. Not one post he's typed has made even the slightest sense or contributed to anything this board does. Banning would absolutely be appropriate but I guess that's why I'm not a moderator.

Hey Elf, congrats. :first: Counting you, I have exactly 2 people on my ignore list & the other isn't a member of the board anymore.

I ride year round. It was one of the mildest winters in recent memory so that helped. It's been around 40-55 for about the last 3 weeks.

Gotta admit - I hit the ignore button too. Bubba's tag line is entirely appropriate.

Now, now, gentlemen. Remember that everybody is special. Also remember that some are more special than others...

    And although the exact source of this saying is unknown (Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Albert Einstein and The King James bible have been credited, to name a few), I like it;

"It is better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Having been guilty of it several times in my life, I try to remember it, the key word here being "try".

And if my patience and tolerance is exceeded by deliberate attempts at provocation, I bide my time until I am sure there are no witnesses. The voices are my guide, and they have never lied to me yet...

For what is worth, if anybody happens to go out to the CA coast and find themselves needing gas by the lovely little spot called Jenner on Highway 1, the guy who owns the only gas pump is over $5 a gallon for mid-grade. I guess he figures that since he's the only gas for the next 50 miles (if you are heading north), he might as well take advantage of it. There is gas in Bodega Bay or Guerneville.

At 3$ a gallon thats a bargain compared to most places around the glob we pay 1.21 aliter on average thats more than 5 dollars an imperial gal and about 4.60 a us gal. in Europe its as high as 8$ a gal:eek: with china and India developing at a staggering rate there just ain't going to be enough to go around. if every one replaced their gas guzzlers with electric cars there wouldn't be enough copper available to build them. now they say methanol is no good for the environment eating up to much farm land or something. you just cant win.well i v had my rant........ now i think ill go burn up a tank of gas while i still can.
