Potentially, it's hard to say you NEED them until you know what condition they're in.

    Actually, NO!!

if your stuff isn't leaking oil or fuel now, your gaskets are fine and can be reused.
Gaskets are usually NOT damaged by disassembling these parts, so may not be needed.

ALWAYS ask a shop to return to you all the old parts they claim to have replaced!

A valve cover gasket shouldn't be spilling oil onto your collector; not that much oil gets up there to begin with, certainly not enough to ooze down the side unless the cover is loosened.

That's the valve cover, there isn't really a way that that cover could be leaking so much oil that it would spill down the the cyldiner and onto your collector.

I just lubed my chain and THAT oil has flung onto my collector, you sure it isn't flung chain lube or oil coming out of the shifter area?

THE valve cover screws could be loose, causing slow oil seepage.

Boys there are no valve shims in a VF500. See parts #19, 20 & 6.

Most shops will only install parts THEY sell you. That way, if a part fails, they can't say that you supplied faulty parts. Besides, their prices won't be much, if any, more expensive than you can order them and pay shipping.:typing:

The rear valve cover can leak oil onto the collector pretty easily if the rubber valve cover bolt washers(#7) are hard and won't compress or stay compressed.

The valve cover bolts to not actually apply pressure to the gasket. The bolts bottom out into the head. When they bottom out, they compress the rubber washers (#7), which put pressure on the valve cover, which puts pressure on the gasket.

A good fix (I've used it for years) is to put a garden hose washer between the valve cover bolt and the washer. The metal around the bolt should cover the washer.

Note: Your valve cover bolts are slightly different than the larger CC bike's I'm used to so some trimming of the washer may be necessary. Also, because you've increased the 'washer' thickness, you may not have to bottom out the valve cover bolts. I tighten the bolts down to where I see the gasket "slightly" bulge.

the one reason i want to get the parts myself is if i do need them the dealer might not have them seen as how they usally work on new bikes and i dont know how long it would take them to get it. i was going to bring it down on a fri and pick it up same weekend. other wise i would have to leave it there tell the next weekend and then they charge storage fees.

Shops usually only charge storage fees if the bike isn't picked up within a certain number of days AFTER the work is completed.

You're lucky they will take the bike in for service; most dealers (damn fools!!) WILL NOT work on bikes older than 10 years!!!
