Looking for some advice on how to protect her from disappearing on me. I'm not so concerned about around the house (locked garage, four dogs) but it is a sport/TOURING bike and it will be left overnight outside some hotel/motel.

    What's your preferred method?

    Disc lock, alarms, combinations of?

I use a lever lock, and a LARGE chain and Master lock, and point the bike at a wall, so it won't roll, along with keeping my crossed fingers.

I live in an apartment complex with gated access. My bike is in my assigned "covered" spot with a cable lock around the pole through the rear wheel. I also keep a disc lock on the front. I'd much rather have it out of sight in a garage but this will have to do. At work the disc lock is the only thing on the bike but I'm able to check on it any time.

I use a disc lock on the front wheel for general use. On trips, I'll usually use a disc lock on both front/rear tires. Looking at adding a hidden "kill switch" to my fuel pump, or something? Haven't figured it all out yet. But at least no one will be able to get it started.

Disc Lock, handlebars locked, and covered in Locked garage.
If I go somewhere, I use the disk lock, which is bright yellow to hopefully deter someone.
I also do the factory thing by locking the handlebars to the far right.

Connect an alarm or a tilt switch onto it, so when it's moved, you get audible notice. Locks can be cut or broken somewhat quietly , or the bike can be picked up but regardless, the bike has to be moved so if you get something on there that will wake you up or someone else, then you'll be better off. Or ask for bottom floor room and wheel the bike in :)

    All of the above.

A couple of 2x4's and a few guys and your bike is loaded in a van and gone in a few seconds though.

Disc and cable lock for sure. During overnight stops on trips, I either choose motels that I can park the bike in the room or ask the clerk if I can park in the drop-off area by the front door if it's a bigger place...

Full coverage insurance. Win win - you either get to keep it or get a new one.

hahaha...I agree with you. Sometimes no matter what you do they are gonna get it. Full coverage is the key...or, a new(used) bike is in order!

And that's the reason I don't stress about some swiping it. I don't even carry locks with me anywhere on the central coast. The only time I was actually concerned with it was when I road coast to coast. I just didn't want to get stranded!

Make sure you get a ground floor unit and drive it inside and for back up my Glock works wonders.

    Well,

kia001, SLOav8r, Chesthing, & RVFR nailed it with the exception that when locked, it must be to a unmovable object (detures the pick & grab).
Even when I've had my room on the ground floor & snuck the bike in, I still locked it to the bed frame & a disc lock when I'm not in the hotel room.

Also having a CCW & a Glock 21 helps

Chesting has the best protection for when close to home & @ home.

But mine has that, 160 & 180 pound great danes that are not friendly, garaged with a really big Doggie door for them to visit, not to mention a array of firearms to make someone air ventelated

At home, a locked garage & [IMG]

Since I've already had my VFR stolen once, I am EXTREMELY paranoid about going anywhere with it. This is entirely detrimental to my riding experiences. I've turned down many riding oppurtunities simply because I didn't have a place to keep my bike safe & sound. I am so paranoid, I will leave a restaurant that won't give me a window seat to keep an eye on it. What's really a shame is that too many people are total worthless human garbage & give me reason to think like this.

    KC-10 FE out...

There isn't really a fool-proof way to protect your bike. Parking by the hotel front door in the light is as good a deterrent as any. I've never had a hotel complain; they don't need the hassle either.

If you happen to be camping, park close to your tent, and tie the bike to your big toe!
