Some of us have removed the rubber snorkel from the front of our airboxes. By doing this (and you can unhook and remove the vacuum on top of airbox as well), the intake is louder than it was before.

As far as better performance by this mod, not sure if there is any definitive proof of that.

I did it because it sounds better IMO.

I asked a buddy that runs a bike shop about this he said you could expect a little more HP out of this along with the better sound most of all when the second valves kick in. He explaned it like this the more air you can cram into the cylnders the more HP you make! So open up that air box and enjoy. Mine has been done for around 3500 miles and in cold and hot weather. I ride year round and I have had no problems. Enjoy!

I have been toying around in my mind with the idea of somehow turning this opening into a ram air inlet. I haven't got much past the thought process yet, but I'm seriously considering the possibility of creating something. I believe it can be done........... What the actual benefit would be remains to be seen, or believed. Hard to do this on a dyno as the machine is stationary..........

Oh! Don't forget a high flow air filter for the best result like a K&N. It's what I got for mine. Around $50.00 for my 2007 25th

I have a 98 VFR with an Erin Racing exhaust, and a K & N air filter with these mods I installed a Power Commander to make sure the fuel system mapping would give me the best performance. If you remove the air box snorkle and increase the air intake and don't adjust the fuel delivery wouldn't you be leaning out the fuel and air mixture? Has anyone checked their sparkplugs after running without the snorkle to see if there are any indications of a lean burn?

ram air will not work unless you set up an air balance system plugging into carb vents

You know those neck-hoods they put on dogs to make sure they dont chew their own butts or stitches? Big white cones? Im going to put one of those suckers on the front of my bike. That is ram-air right there. Ill be feeding that airbox so much air, so many birds, bugs, and a few skunks, I cant imagine horsepower gains of anything less than 50.

I believe your are saying in Norcal's situation he would need to do so with the throttle bodies not the carbs?

If you alter the air intake system you change the air/fuel mixture which can result in a lean or rich burn. Installing a K&N airfilter (allows more air in no need for ram air) and a free flowing exhaust changes the vacumm on the intake side and allows the exhaust to exit the engine faster. If you never change or clean your airfilter you will restrict the airflow to the engine reducing fuel economy and posibly fouling the sparkplugs (rich burn).

Fuel injected engines with mass airflow sensors and oxygen senors will alter the fuel air mixture through the ECM to a certain degree. The 1998 VFR does not have either of these sensors so to compensate for these changes companies came up with systems like the Power Commander.

I've seen engines where people have removed the stock airbox and installed individual K&N airfilters without rejetting their carbs causing severe piston, ring, and cylinder wall damage.

I would be interested in hearing from someone who has made this mod and replaced or checked their sparkplugs after running this way for several thousand miles. What color was the end of the plug?

The PAIR system doesn't actually inject air into the cylinder during the combustion cycle. When the PAIR solenoid engages, air from the airbox is drawn into the exhaust ports to dilute any unburned fuel in the exhaust stream, which is subsequently read by the O2 sensors located in the exhaust collector.

Here is what it does. The exhaust emission control system consists of a secondary air supply system which introduces filtered air into the exhaust gases in the exhaust port. Fresh air is drawn into the exhaust port whenever there is a negative pressure pulse in the exhaust system. This charge of fresh air promotes burning of the unburned exhaust gases and changes a considerable amount of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide into relatively harmless carbon dioxide and water vapor. The PAIR system is controlled by the ECM using check valves and a solenoid. It is basically to stop backfiring from a lean off throttle situation.

If you choose to run a Power Commander you should eliminate the PAIR system and the O2 sensors from the equation. This is done so that the Exhaust Gas Analyzer (used when custom mapping a PC on a dyno) gets the correct reading for optimizing the adjustments of the air/fuel mixture. Basically you are just losing the weight of the solenoid and associated plumbing if the bike is stock. If you don't have a PCII or III it is just removing weight, which is about 2 pounds total. I am sceptical of the posted dyno runs.....

Thanks for the info Norcal! I'm not familure with the PAIR system sounds like I need to do some research.
