I try and use common sense, and only listen to music when on long rides away from traffic. I personally find that monotonous sound bores me and contributes to a lack of focus. Has anybody ever ridden across Alberta on the trans canada? That stretch can turn you into a zombie! Music keeps me focused on riding my bike and more importantly drowns out the voices in my head. Whether or not you listen to music is your own personal choice. Choose wisely.

With such opinonated people contributing to this thread, maybe somebody should start an abortion or war in iraq discussion to keep them busy!

we already did the war this winter, but I don't believe we have covered abortion yet. back on the music thing, though, I turned my music off the last time I was down in LA in traffic. Holy Cow! it's crazy down there....

there is a terror war on abortion in Iraq?

I think over 40% of the folks in the USA are below the average income in the United States of America. What is your candidate going to do to change that fact?

That is my question for the nominees.

(I've been too lazy to ride with my iPod, but would consider it)

I don't wear ear-plugs, and I don't have music in my helmet. I don't have any particular problem with either, if the volume is kept reasonable, but I have a song going in my head all the time anyway, so I don't need that. With a full-face helmet, I don't think there is a significant loss of hearing over time, but I find it really amusing that the "no-helmet" crowd claims they can hear better without a helmet!

That's really funny; in a sick sort of way.

I've always thought that the exhaust note was music enough. I have tried the iPod while riding but I missed the bike sounds too much.

I need to get me some of those molded earphone/plugs. I am dyfunctional I guess and it is hard for me to get the foam ones to fit right.

those ones that SLOav8r mentioned shure? sound cool but they are high. I kind of like the shoei speaker idea... that's what I'd like to have (if I can't get the speakers and sub in the fairing with the cool neon blinking lights with the bass hit)

Try the AIRSOFT ones like this:

Also try reaching over the top of your head and pulling up on your ear while you insert the foam earplug. You'll get a 30% better seal than just shoving the foam earplug in your ear.

Yes! Masonv45 has the right idea. Start by rolling them in your (clean) hands to compress them evenly. The pulling of the ear by reaching over the head is the only way to get those rascals in there properly. And the exact angle is the key. Once they slip in, hold the end for 20-30 seconds with your finger tips for them to expand out and against your ears--this avoids them pushing out of the ear canal as they expand. You figure it out fairly quickly. The molded ones are the ticket but hideously expensive. The over the counter ones do a pretty good job if you get them in correctly. Chuck em after a use or two.

Yeah, I do the whole "pull the ear" back thing, and I can get them in, it just takes awhile with different plugs sometimes, and the non-foam airsoft ones that mason showed I bought awhile back, but they do not drown out the noise anywhere near as much as the foam ones.

    Thanks for the info though.

Music 50% and real music the other 50%

I use my Ipod on longer trips and I usually listen to the sweet exhaust the rest of the time!

    I'm torn...

Old school me say no distractions while riding and you'll be more alert.

New rider me listens to music and feels more alert because I'm not getting lulled into a false sense of boredom by the ride itself.

I think it's always going to be contentious among riders and there's nothing that will sway those that don't listen to change their minds; and I respect that.

Some of the responses sound like my mum, except she says that riding a motorbike is dangerous she didn't mention listening to music.

I listen to music whenever I feel like it, that includes while riding. Is it going to block a crucial noise? Hmmmm considering I cannot hear much apart from the wind and engine with the music off I doubt it. As far as a car coming up behind while I am stopped...I always 'watch' the car coming up behind me at the lights. Isn't that what everyone does? Oh right, if I am not listening to music I can just stare into the distance and hope I hear the danger. Ha ha

Maybe I should ask my mum if I can listen to music while riding...

    riding with music

I sometimes ride with my ipod if i'm going for an extended ride ie; 50miles or more. I use the standard earbuds they don't fit too tight where i'm unable to hear my suroundings. I put my ipod on shuffle, set and lock the volume to a moderate level, have the cord on my left side so i can pull the plug if needed. Its not always music, there are some perrty good podcasts out there to enjoy. The sounds can help to make those long slabs less mudane. To keep the earbuds in place, I wear a Balaclava, keeps the head warm and the earbuds in place when putting on, taking off the lid

I'm writing from Spain (Europe), I don't know the laws from others countrys in the UE, but here it's is forbidden wearing ear phones or speaking cellular phone (directly or with ear phone) while you drive, under EUR150 penalty. In motorbike you can't use the cellular or MP3, but in the car through
speakers and music installation only (with bluetooth sparrow). The govern says this law saves lives.

    Regards

Spain is "on the Ball"! Here in Germany it will also cost you a pretty penny should you get caught on the phone while driving as well. And check this out... It is even United States Army Europe regulation that you can not even ride a bicycle on a military instilation with head phones on! If a rule like that is in effect for our nations finest, it must be good for all of us!

Sure is funny that some bikes come with am/fm/cass/cb ( now a days its cd and 2 way radio) from the factory. No these bike that come with those are not sport bikes but they are infact motorcycles.

I listen to a mp3 player while riding my MX bike and used to listen on my dual sport.

The bottom line is being responsible for your own actions and remember that not everyone pays attention to what they are doing, let alone what you are doing on your bike.
