So after looking around (online) at many kinds of MC specific riding jeans I have finally ordered some of the Diamond Gusset brand "Defender" Jeans today. I will post up how I like them when I get them.

I looked at mostly the Icon: Anthem, Hooligan, and Recon; the Sliders at Comp. Accessories, and the famous Draggin jeans.

    http://www.gussetclothing.com/defend.html

The reason I decided to try the DG's is because of the amount of Kevlar in them. They put it in the knees, butt, and hips, where the other brands only do the knees and/or the butt.

I will probably get some knee armor too from Icon or another brand.

I used a pair of Icon jeans for a while to commute. They pretty much were what they were, a little thicker pair of jeans. The expansion areas and the longer legs made them fit well when in riding position which was nice. Never crash tested but I'm sure they would have shredded as well as destroyed my knees if given the opportunity.

I have crash tested them twice at low speeds and they do pretty well. In between the layers on the knees there is "aramid" or some such that seems to absorb some of the friction. they aren't great protection, but they are better than jeans.

I personally witnessed what happened someone once that went down at about 70 mph on a tarmac road...and it was not at all pretty. Cheeks of both buttocks ground flat from sliding, abrasions up and down both legs, blood on the pavement from where his *ss was sliding...it looked like a shark had gotten ahold of him, no joke. He was going to the burn ward, acc. to Paramedics on scene. His jeans were literally blown apart as if they were tissue paper.

I've worn full leather on virtually every ride ever since. I expect my Aerostich will provide quite good protection, but then again, I have not been down on the street in 19 years...knock on wood.

I have a preference for leather, but have recently brought some riding jeans. I got the Shift Torque jeans and have some mixed feelings about them. Overall they are well made, but lack armour or pockets for knee or hip armour. Also they are button fly and do not come in black. The button fly was not in the description and I did let the commpany I ordered from know about that. Last year I purchased the Tourmaster/Cortech Jeans to go with the denim jacket and they did have knee armour, but the fit was lousy and were not well made. I sent them back. I have now given up on riding jeans and wil splurge for another pair of leather overpants even though they are expensive.

Were those regular jeans or the Kevlar/Aramid reinforced ones?

Aramid is a strong, heat resisitant fiber. You may have heard of Nomex - what they make fire suits out of. Para-aramid is what Kevlar is. Courtesy of Wiki! Pretty interesting stuff nonetheless.

Regular jeans, but I would not want to be in aramid ones either in a crash like I described above...aramid does not have the abrasion resistance of leather, as far as I know. I saw a comparison of a number of abrasion resistance of materials in a study in Performance Bikes years ago, and in that test, aramid did not survive the abrasion test as well.

What about just some leather pants? I was considering some textile. A light bulb went off in my head today and I realized I wanted some kind of protection. I wear regular jeans now. I'm actually nervous about riding tomorrow because I don't have protective pants yet. And I have skill (not that it matters). Can you wear leather pants over jeans or something? Say like if I rode my bike into work.

I wear my textile pants over my regular jeans and it works for me so far. I had a nice 8o foot slide on the road Saturday and held up nice, never touched my jeans. Pics can been seen on my Sandlot post.

Leather is best had a 45mph side in '04 which the quality leather touring pants and legs survived well and still in use today...Friend of mine had a similar speed slide on Kevlar Draggin Jeans, they held up abrasion wise but he still received painfull friction burns which took many months to heal. Leather on the other hand has natural impact and heat insulation built into it...

Tour Master and many other companies make plain ole leather pants with no armor or anything. Get a size bigger and wear them over your work pants.

Being in AZ, we can't really be wearing leather April through October. Too f'in hot. Perforated would probably work, but since I'm not made of money, I just got some reinforced jeans and A*s knee armor.

I just ordered a pair of Alpinestars armored jeans. They say they have skid material reinforcements as well as knee pads(removeable). They have not arrived yet, and I will have to have them altered(big waist, short legs). Their sizing only goes up all the way around-waist size increases as inseam increases. I will let you know how they turn out in a couple of weeks.

I have been looking into some riding jeans for a while. After reading this post I think I need to get some. Icon does a lot of advertising for their jeans in the magazines. I'd like to get some with some padding, I worry about knees and my a$$... That crash at 70 makes me cringe....

I have the Cortech DSX jeans. I only use them for MSF classes. They have leather sewn into the butt & knees along with armor in the knees. I agree with Emon. The may have leather & armor but they're really not that good. For the price I can't complain but there are better solutions.

    KC-10 FE out...

Well just bought some Joe Rocket Phoenix pants. Really like them so far. Hopefully they will never be tested but I feel a whole lot safer than when I was just wearing jeans.
