I recently lost my only key (stupid) to my 1993 pearl white vfr 750. I am wondering if anyone knows a better way that having the fitting charge from a locksmith done? IE is there a code on the ignition or does the vin give away the key code etc? Thanks a bunch.

I know that you can use the VIN to get a key cut on modern automobiles...

I don't know if Honda does this going as far back as 1993, especially for bikes. I did just check out my owner's manual, and the original owner had the foresight to write down a "key code", so you may have some luck with this.

Call your local Honda dealership. If they say no, remove the ignition cylinder, and take it to your locksmith.

well, I know that when I had an issue like this on my wife's ninja 250, it was cheaper to change out the whole shebang. I was able to get a new tank lid, ignition and seat latch on ebay for less than half what a locksmith here wanted for making a key...

If you can find the dealer who sold it new, they should have the key# on file if you know the name of who bought it new. They might also be able to find it through the VIN#. If not, a locksmith is your best bet.

The number for the key is also on the helmet lock. Downside of that is that the helmet lock must be removed in order to find that number

Forget the VIN#, can't cut a key from it. What you need is the number found on either your ignition cylinder or helmet lock cylinder. Specifically, you need the last three digits from those numbers. So, either an A, B, C, or D followed by two numbers. Unfortunately, the locks may be held in by one-time use bolts that either break when removed or strip their own threads. If you remove your ignition cylinder, you'll probably need to replace two bolts - part # 90100-MN8-910. Write that code down somewhere, just in case you ever lose another key.

Once you get the code, you may need to check with a few locksmiths. I had to hit 3 of them until they were able to locate the cut on their computer. I made 4 keys. I don't want to have to go through that again.

Lock code is stamped on the ignition lock itself. Where the rod comes out to lock the steering. And on the bottom of the tank lock and as stated above, on the helmet lock.
