I had to install a new hard drive and re-install all my various bits of software, and now the "Chat" strings no longer appear at the top of the page when I enter a thread, or go to the "Chat" link. I get the small icon and the "loading..." message, but no text shows up underneath. Something in Microsoft Exploder need adjusting, or ???

I knew I was old the very first time that treachery occured to me as a solution, instead of fair play...

Besides, remember how many times in our lives we've known more than anybody else? I can think of at least three periods of time that I was unreasonably impressed with myself until the mighty hand of fate and/or life slapped some humility into me.

But I do know what you mean. Some of the guys I work with are twenty years my junior, and rip right into a new piece of software to figure out what does what, and learn how to use it in no time at all.

    Damn. Now I feel old...

Darn, Reg71, I FORGOT about all the patches and service paks and the rest of that nonsense I had to go through! If I remember correctly, the last "upgrade" was 58meg, which takes a while on a dial-up...

    Oh, boo hoo...

I miss DOS, and I miss carburetors, and what does it all mean anyway...

    I'll bet you're right. Thx!

If you're installing from an old enough set of disks, it's probably a java issue.

Test your browser for java computability here. http://www.javatester.org/

Download and install here if you need it. Going to try to install google toolbar, make sure you uncheck it.
    http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Another issue may just be your dialup, it may just need to sit and download everything. Once it gets the code, it'll load up quicker in the future.

As mentioned, the chat function requires the use of Java script. If you've got an outdated version, you'll get problems like that.

You should be using FireFox though in all seriousness. Less vulnerabilities and customizable. My two favorite add-ons are "FasterFox" and "NoScript." Works wonders.

Thanks! I tried the test, and my PC passed. The modem icon show no data traffic, so it has downloaded whatever it is going to. When I figure out what it is/was, I'll add it to this post. I am thinking that Reg71 and VeryFunRide pointing me in the direction of FireFox might be an option.

    Thanks for the input, gang.

you dont have to be an insider to use chat. you just need IE or firfox or something with the proper java patches (I believe) you should see chat at the top of the page when you click on messages or you can still click the chat button...

Firefox did the trick. Exploder blew up on a few other sites, including one that I was trying to download Firefox from (imagine that...), so all is well.

Thanks again, Reg71 and VeryFunRide. Good suggestion.
