See, here is my dilemma. I would love for my gf to learn how to ride, in fact, I am still going to show her how someday on a lighter bike....however, I know how distracted that she can be when she drives, and it would scare the bejesus out of me to have her out fighting thru traffic each day with or without me. Let's face it, everybody is out to get us, cutting us off, tailgating, driving very aggressively. Then we have to deal with road debris, oil slicks, flat tires, situations where we MUST maneuver in a split second without having time to think about it...the list goes on and on. Well, based upon seeing her reactions driving her car, and a mtn bike, I just would never think of having her ride a motorcycle around traffic, or just in general on the road riding. She does not have the reaction time, and total awareness to be a motorcyclist...at least at this time. Without her being surrounded by 2 tons of metal, with seatbelts and airbags...it just gives me the willies...I would be afraid of getting "that call" one day.

What does everybody else think about it? Oh, and I am not knocking women, hell, there are a lot of guys I know that would never be a good motorcyclist. I just guess that I am baised and I think that a much higher percentage of guys are qualified to ride bikes than girls...in the specifics of suriving and all. I think it probably has to do with alertness, response time, and aggressiveness.

I can teach my grandma (or anybody off the street) how to ride my VFR in a straight line, but could she/they survive by herself in traffic and all of the situations that we motorcyclists have to deal with day in and day out??

    Ok, flame away... :target:

I wish I had a girlfriend so I could have this problem. I'll get back to you on the solution once I have examined the issue in practice.

    Which is to say, "never".

Maybe you and Manuela can find some deserted back roads to cruise on. Keep the bike at your place and only have her ride with you. Just an idea.

Ah, good start Grasshopper. As far as your girlfriend, you seem to make it clear...at this point it is probably best not to start. IF you wanted to get her moving towards that I would keep her on the mountain bike and work on the basic two-wheel skills...I think that it is an under-rated tool. I had decades of experience on road and mountain bikes and it helped me tremendously when I jumped on a motorcycle.
As far as MY fiancee...nope...she just is not interested. That is fine.
As far other women...in general? Wow...hard to generalize. I think the biggest issue is not that many are INTERESTED. I think many many women could become great riders IF they were interested. Ya gotta have the passion to become good. AND SURVIVE. But I do think that other than some strength issues, both sexes are created with a similar range of reflexes and co-ordination...there are great potential riders in both sexes. And I feel that as far as "agressiveness" is concerned, I think that it is required to become a good RACER or agressive streetfighter BUT not necessarily to become a SAFE street rider.
But, I do love to see women bicycle riders and motorcycle riders...such a unique perspective and breath of fresh air. I also love having the female Forum members here...they add a lot We need to encourage them (and scare them less)!
    Ok...I'm done...

My ex hated motorcycles, so no problem there. My current GF would like to ride and already knows she'd rather have a smaller slower cruiser style bike. Simply because she's sure she'd be more comfrotable with it and the speed it'd go. I've told her to buy a Rebel and learn to ride and if she's good at it and enjoys it then go from there.

Let your GF figure out what she wants to do. Remember that first fall is the best learning experience. You learn right there if you're willing to get on again, if you're paying enough attention, and if the bike you're riding is right for you. Not saying I'd want her to crash or even have a low speed drop, but let her know it's a big possibility and see what she thinks from there.

Yeah, I love seeing female riders as well Nung. I guess I get my generalizing of women from the ones driving to work more worried about getting their mascara/makeup on than watching the road. I am speaking more of girls I know I guess. It just seems to be more rare to have a chick who has the reflexes and ability...and as you said...the interest. When you do find one, it is a great thing though!

Yep, I am biased I guess...and guess what else? I think that all flight attendants should be female and be called stewardess'....

She doesn't really push to do it, and is probably afraid to. I feel like the daddy with her and don't really think she has what it takes right now, and I would rather not have to learn if she likes it by trying and crashing....because she got banged up on the mtn bikes and couple of times, and lord knows what would happen on a bike. It would be different if I saw the ability in her while she rides at mtn bike, or see her having great alertness. I am just glad she is surrounded by metal right now.

Oh, her parents would kill me as well!

Everytime she sees me on here she smiles and asks "are you arguing again sweetie?" She saw me wound up a time or two in the past and now to her VFRworld = arguing.

Yeah, I got from your first post she was some who fell a lot on the mountain bike. It's why I said to remind her about the high probability of a fall on a motorcycle. If she's not pushing it, don't worry about it. She probably just wants another thing in common with you. Remind her you don't need to like all of the same things and she's still a welcome passenger whenever she'd like. That would probably slow her interest of it down.

I work with a woman bought a CBR600RR just for track days, and rides a 919 on the street. She loves what the track days do for her street riding abilities. Here husband and son also ride (dirt and street, I think).

For what it's worth, woman, in general, have faster reflexes than men (according to the test I read). That doesn't mean much, ultimately. Think of all the people you have known that ride, and shouldn't. They take a lot of risks and/or crash a lot. Sometimes it is truly bad luck, but most of the time it is an error in judgement.

Then there are those people that look at motorcycling as dangerous, and always will. They have never tried it, nor do they want to. The thought of it makes them afraid, for whatever reason.

Derstuka, when you describe your significant other, it reminded me of a woman I know, a good friend, who should never even think about riding. I don't think I would even want her as a passenger. She's one heck of a good human, but like all of us, she came from the factory with her particular options installed, none of which are suited to street riding. She's marvelous with horses, and meticulous at paying attention to detail. Not a rider, though.

Anyway, I guess what I should really be saying here is if it were me, I would pay attention to my gut feeling. Long term survival on a bike takes a particular combination of skills. All I could do is state my reservations as diplomatically as possible, and see which way the wind blows. Like all humans, you'll never be able to stop somebody from doing something they are determined to do, and they usually resent you for trying to.

But hey, no matter what happens, rest assured it will be all your fault... Hope that helps!

I taught my wife the basics of riding. I'm not saying I taught her to proficiency, I just taught her the absolute basics. I then sent her to a $400 One-On-One teacher who did everything else, up to & including escorting her to the NJ DMW to take her road test & get her license.

The only reason I pushed her to start riding was so she would QUIT giving me shit about my riding. I would disappear for hours on end & you can't hear a cell phone while riding. It was getting old. My solution was for her to start riding.

Now, the only reason I thought it was a good idea for her to start riding is that she is an excellent driver. She's a better driver than 90% of the people I know. Maybe it has something to do with her being German & learning to drive in Germany. If my wife was one of the typical absent minded pinheads that NJ is chock full of, there is no way in hell I would have remotely suggested she get on a bike.

So Herr Stucka, if you readily admit your GF is a substandard driver, I would recommend against the idea. No offense to you or her just calling it like I see it.

Oh, I almost forgot, my wife wants to break your knees for calling her a Stewardess. (If you really want to piss of a FA, call them a "Certified Air Snack Technician:biggrin:)

    KC-10 FE out...

Hey derstuka, EVvy figures it is not the gender that is at issue as much as the personality. My wife - no way, no how and not ever!!! She once took the moped out at the cabin and had to "lay it down so she didn't hit the dog". She didn't see the humor, but when she came back and the front basket was bent, I nearly pissed myself laughing. Oh man, she was mad. Nope, not Lisa, she tends to crash her vehicle every other year just for practice. However, did you all see Pink on her Triumph? Lookin' pretty tough.

Thanks for all of your input guys. I kinda already knew I was gonna wait on her, or sidestep it altogether. I was curious of what everybody else thinks about their signicant other taking up riding, and if they are a good candidate for it as well.

BTW, Evvy, I think that my gf would have fun on a moped or scooter, if we could ride somewhere with little traffic.

derstuka... and no domestic animals either...I agree, little traffic and a moped- my wife and I would have a blast. As would I. Many women are very fit to become riders, I have no argument. Just sayin, I didn't marry her for her potential of becoming an accomplishied rider - - ya know what I mean?? Besides, she like to ride along with me once in a while, that is fine. To pilot her own doesn't seem to be an issue; and I won't push it. For me, it is pretty much "my time". I am not the selfish type, but it is one of the few things that I have to myself. with all due respect to the gals - EV

I went through a similar situation with my wife. she expressed some interest and I eventually got her a little ninja 250 but she has only ridden it a little in the parking lot where they do the rider course. We also have a small dirtbike that my stepson rides that she has putted around on some. she is afraid to get on the road yet (which she should be until she gets mroe confident with the basics). she has her permit but she says she's going at her own pace which is fine with me. she occasionally rides with me 2 up though. I agree with everyone else here, just let her decide. Oh, and as far as paying attention, I think once she gets on a bike, she will. That's one of the reason's I always recommend a bike over a quad for kids riding in the dirt is that you have to actually learn something to get on a bike and ride. Any fool can jump on a quad and take off and think they are great.

My G/F (of 9 years) started out on a 250 ninja last june.

she loves riding but lacks confidence in herself . The plan is to get her on the SV650 (she started riding it some at the end of the season) as much as possible before our end of may trip to Deals Gap
