My main 30A fuse blew on me, and it happened as i was starting the engine. So I saw the 4 prong connector was corroded/melted. I crimped new single connectors for each of the 4 wires and reconnected them in the correct places.

But my 30A fuse is still blowing even before i have the key in!!! It blows as soon as I reconnect the battery. Whats wrong here?

I checked all accessory fuses and tried looking the bike over for anything suspicious. I just don't know really what to look for. The bike would start to crank over w/o the main fuse in when i'd touch a few wires together by the battery....

    Thanks,
    Mark

Some live (+) wires must be touching the frame. Start looking at the battery cables.

Maybe, but how can you explain the fuse blowing as I am starting the bike. The bike as been dropped recently..not sure if that had some late affects or not.

Check the area where the bike was dropped. There must be a wire that was cut and is now shorting to the frame.

mine was doing this when I re-wired my R/R... I had to amputate the connector plug at the R/R, and managed to hook up the (+) wire to the (-) R/R pin and vice versa. The 30A fuse would pop as soon as the battery was re-connected.

I would just go through your wiring harness and make sure you don't have any dead shorts as well.

    Starting solenoid could be bad.
Replace any connectors/wires that are/look burnt.

I went and ahead a disconnect ALL connectors in the wiring harness along the frame, and also took out all accessory fuses to isolate any short circuits or bad grounds.

First step reconnecting, the REGULATOR connection makes the 30A fuse blow. I'm still stumped though, does this mean the REG is bad? Or does it just mean the power source is grounding out farther on down the harness? I see no irregularities in the harness...

you have classic symptoms of bad v.r. diodes!

Get a new regulator and a lottery ticket and see which is luckier......

I would have to guess that squirrelman is correct. I actually had this happen while driving down the interstate at night at 75+ mph. Kind of scarry when the headlight goes out at that speed. Anyhow, after cleaning my pants out, I disconected the R/R and was able to limp the bike the next 20 miles home on the battery. (I had to use a metal pen clip to replace the blown fuse:smile: ) After replacing the R/R everything was back to normal.
