Ok, I to have been looking into rear shocks. It used to be that HyperPro made rear shocks for the 4th Gens, but not any more. It appears that Penske and Ohlins are the only 2 left. I e-mailed Elka yesterday, and got a negative response on the 4th Gens. I didn't see anything from Wilbers either. It could be that I'm just looking at the wrong websites or pages, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I also went to the Traxxion Dynamics site and saw rebuild parts but no shocks. This is probably the only mod that I'll do this winter and I'm looking at getting one within the next 4 weeks, so if any of you could point me in the right direction, I'd be very grafeful!!!!

Hyperpro makes a shock for the 1999 VFR. Hyperpro is a Dutch company. They make a Model 461 for your bike. The shock is fitted with a remote resevoir, is all CNC machined from 7075 and has no cast pieces, has adjustable high and low speed compression dampening with 30 click adjustment each and rebound dampening with 50 click adjustability. The only problem seems to be that they don't offer adjustable ride height. I was recently checking into these shocks myself and the MSRP is $849.99. you can take a look, but the inability to adjust ride height would be something I would definately consider.

OK Let me throw this into the shock issue. There is a site Aftershocks which rebuilds shocks. Havent gotten through to anyone yet to see what they do. Has anyone rebuilt the stock showa? When the shock was new it was ok. Are other shocks that we have been discussing stiff for everyday sport/touring? Most are labled racing shocks. I will try again today to get some more info from Aftershocks

Cool, thanks for the info!!! I'm not really worried about ride height adjustability right now, the 031/041 shock would be a definate imporvement even w/o ride height adjustments. I just might get this one, it all depends on what else I can come up with. Where can we get these Hyper Pro shocks, all I saw was a list of importers. I haven't ruled out Penske or Ohlins yet, but haven't heard anything back from them yet either. Thanks again!!!

Got a hold of Phill at after shocks, seemed to know a lot about VFRs. He sells the Penski for $800 aand change but will also rebuild the showa and gives info on how to set up with front forks. Says it will handle like new and for $200.

So you think Huh. I'm not bashing your thoughts, you can't fix what you don't know. But then you just might not ride like I do, and are perfectly fine with it. One of the great things about the VFR is the flexibility in what folks want to get out of them, but as stated most OEM shocks on the VFR are pretty much toast by 15k.
Yep can't really go wrong with any of those mentioned, there was an Ohlins in an ebay store that was pretty much a drop in replacement for your 5th gen. check em out.

My WP was in the mid $600.

Can't be said loud enough, biggest thing to making your VFR ride & handle well, is set up the Sag. It will make a night and day difference.

I contacted Ohilns before the holidays. They replied to an e-mail promply with "no application for 1995 VFR" note. Must have gotten out of them recently.....damn Yamaha owned company!

Traxxion does have them. Look here:

I'd hate to hide such a pretty upgrade, but the $16 velcro fastened boot looks to be the cats ass for keeping things tidy without suffering the expense of a hugger.

WP is the OEM chioce of KTM so if you have a KTM dealer in your neck of the woods........

I doubt the stocker is rebuildable, but I'm prepared to be wrong.

The Penske is domestic (for those in the US) and is rebuildable with parts/service available readily. I'm getting closer to sold if I can build up the guts to part with the cash equal to 1/3 the value of my bike!

Vlad, thanks for the info! I'm not too concerned with price as long as I can keep it under $1k, as part of my tax return will be going to my shock, it's all about the best product that I can get. I've heard good things about Wilbers, Ohlins (no longer available???) and Penske, nothing about HyperPro. So I guess we'll have to see who can get me what. I'm interested in learning more about the WP shock the RVFR was talking about as well.

Linderman Engineering is the outfit I got mine through,

Only thing is, I bout dropped to the floor when I saw the new prices, thats if they are correct, as I wasn't able to locate the shock I have, talk to Jim there 408 371-6151 tell em I sent you and you're a VFR world member. Mine was $634 with shipping and with the right spring for my weight. thou it did take 2+ months to get, way worth the wait. after a full season now under my belt nearly 9 thousand miles and I can still say it is the best investment I have made. Model # 17.14.09.65/01 Funny, now that I look at the build receipt, LOL it was built on my birthday, didn't know that, how cool.
