I must first confess that I have been living in the States for the last six years and I have become used to the great insurance rates available there. But now I'm back and holly $&^$&^$ the rates are off the chart and that was just for the car. I'm afraid to ask what they are going to demand for my VFR. I think the worst part is that they treat you like a new driver even though they can see that you were with them before for fifteen years (cooperators).

I would like to know who my fellow Canadian VFR riders are using as a start to getting ready for spring.

Insurance rates are usually established by collusion between ins. industry and government regulators, so write to your MP on the hill in Ottawa?

Tell him you want go riding in his riding!

Much better rates south of 40 are one small reason to be thankful we're not Canadian! ON the other side of the equation is the Canadian Ballet.....totally nude dancing!

go shopping! not sure how it is in Ont, but where I have lived it either public ins, which is a deal for cars but sucks for toys, or part of each, or all private. Be prepared to bring your driving record proof as thats what will get you the discounts...I livedin a commie province where it cost the same for my 25 yr old honda as my new one!!! , with public only as the legal choice. In BC I have to get the liability from the public, but I get to shop for the rest of the ins..With the right record I can save 50-60% on that part(colision, theft). Just depends ...hope you can get what u need ont..:)

I am over the whining now as i realize its the idiots out there that make it cost what it does.I shouldnt blame the govt as I know how ins works, but like everyone else I will!! :)

    good luck

This is a link to the GTA Motorcycle forum insurance group. It will give you a start in finding out who is helpful and who is NOT! of course ther is a lot of rubbish in this forum, but try to sort through it.

I insure my VFR through Jerry Kaspard (you can find his contact info in the link) and he has placed it with Jevco Insurance in Montreal.

Good luck with dealing with the insurance issue in Ontario!

    Thanks Guys!

I know I'm jumpin the gun a bit but it never hurts to be prepared for spring.

Nitronorth; I can relate to this as I used to live just south of Richmond BC and yes ICBC was an expensive PITA!

Pm_wizard; Thanks for the link, I will sift through and see what I can find.

Hey there isn't any snow here right now, perhaps a little toot is in order before the weather hammers us again.

    Insurance in Ontario

My broker also insured me with Jevco. The price seems reasonable, and it will drop abit after one year of full coverage.

A buddy of mine is using State Farm and said he got a great rates. (Triumph Speed Triple). I didn't shop them for rates, but will when renewal time comes around.

I vacation in Whistler every summer for a good 6 months (other 6 in Seattle) and I just don't know how I could swallow the whole bike insurance pill in BC. I keep mine insured in the states. Geico provides me with this cool insurance card for Canada, that lasts 1 year. My girlfriend who lives in BC fulltime, puts down about $110 / month with ICBC, for an 89 GS500E. She hates me when I remind her that in the states, I pay about $220 a year. British Columbia is an awesome place to ride. For peeps that have not heard of the Sea To Sky Highway that takes you from Vancouver to Whistler....you are missing out. Motorcycle heaven for an hour and a half.

There is good and bad to everything in life. Fortunately, Canada has a lot of good things going for it. Its an awesome place, and somewhere I call my 3rd home.

Actually it's a good question for some peoples to investigate ....why rates are SO VERY high in Ontario. Losses would be similar to those in US, so why SO MUCH higher rates??

I have to admit, I don't get it... We can only ride 7-8 months of the year, the roads are mostly straight (people don't have to learn complicated manoeuvers, and we pay a fortune in MC insurance. The whole issue of paying more than for a car bothers me even more so on a per km per year basis. We can't do much damage to anything other than ourselves, and we are required to wear helmets and many wear protective gear. I keep thinking it is the insurance companies saying " well, it's dumb pastime so lets soak the suckers!" - not an actuarial based analysis of course, but why so expensive? Must be hundreds (thousands) of motorcycle riders in perpetual rehab.

We have only one tenth the population to fund it. Even though the claims are one tenth here, the profit would also be one tenth as well (all else being equal). It all comes down to pool size. Even though Ontario is larger than any state area wise (almost twice size of Texas), 90% of our population lives in 10% of the space, so we have a fairly concentrated population.

Ya know, if I had to pay $2200 bucks for insurance on one bike, I probably would either just have liability, or not ride, because I would not be able to afford it. Ya have to figure how much the bike is worth I guess. On my old FZR1000 they wanted 2500 bucks a year when I was 21 years old. I said to hell with that. I paid $2500 bucks for the bike. I just had liability on it for $150 a year.
