Consider it stirred; my least favorite styled VFR is the 4th gen. IMHO, the 5th gen is much better looking. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

What mileage are these engines good for? Is 30k anything to care about? At what point do you start thinking, nah--I'll keep looking, that's too many miles.

Dunno, maybe 80-100,000? I have 36K on mine now and i think it's just broke in. I put a 929 shock in the back and i have a couple tricks up my sleeve for the front. Oh, and for the record...

    4th gen RULES!!!

I would think that the engine life would be well over 100,000 miles, after all, the VFR engine is developed from Honda's endurance racing engine design. FWIW, my local Honda/Yamaha dealer knows of an R1 owner who has over 300,000 miles on his R1.

There's a few VFRs I've seen with over a 100k still going strong so mileage really isn't an issue. more of how well it was taken care of would be my item of concern.

Ok, RW. We need to switch up rides on #7 huh? Now if only the weather would hurry up and get way better.

 I'm just going to stay out of this one :yield:

But  ALL Honda V4's are good with high milage, sold my 86 VF500 with 162,000 miles on it with ALL origanal engine parts, & it's still putting around Phoenix 10 years latter

every 2500mile oil change X 65 times to the 162,000 miles
(I do that on all my street bikes, Track/Race bikes are done after every track/race weekends)

What's with the no comment? Have the V-Tech boys wore you out  The 4th vs 5th threads usually don't get the crying like the 5th vs. 6th threads, so as long as you don't mention the "V" word, all is good

dunno. I'm at 53k and it still seems fine to me. I change the oil regularly but am not a maintenance fanatic like some on here. many things about maintenance I didn't even know about until joining this forum. My general rule is change the oil, put gas in, lube the chain occasionally and ride the piss out of it. so far, so good. I do about 1000 miles a month give or take. Oh, and 5th gen is better. ;)

Just a quick update....I found the right deal on a '98.

So far, I'm happy. I need to change a few things on it, detail it, service it.

Well, I sorta have too many bikes at the moment. The last two or three years have seen a series of purchases that are now stretching my space and ability to justify ownership. I know, I know--motorcycles aren't about being reasonable--but somethings gotta give...

'90 HawkGT, race/project/street bike (not used in a while)
'02 XR650R, plated (used a fair amount for dirt and street)
'00 CR500R, plated (used a fair amount this dune season)
'95 CR250R (used some, but not a whole lot since the 500 arrived)

With the jet ski (needs rebuilt, not used in a while) and my beloved '85 ATC250R (used regularly during dune season), and now this VFR--I'm thinking I need to consolidate. I don't really have time for them all anyway.

The 500 ain't going anywhere though. Of the dirt bikes, I've had it the least amount of time. Plus, it's a great duner and there's no motorcycle experience I've had yet that's quite like riding a CR500 through the streets...

Nice 5th you picked up there. All you need to do now is put a Staintune on it.
