the BEST EASIEST mod you can make to VFR

My ride is '99 vfr 800 and after owning A Blackbird, zx11, cbr929, cbr f3 I love the vfr but it is a little low on power SO;
I put on a used Vance and Hines slipon muffler off Ebay which helped some, then opened the airbox{very easy} and found an oem airfilter with 26k on it, replaced it with a K&N filter and VOILA, I have a new bike that has lots more bottom end and revs freely to redline.
To open the airbox, remove 2 front gas tank bolts and lift it up, leave rear 2 bolts attatched, prop tank up,{the overflow tube will be stretched real tite so pull it loose, and hang over side so it is obvious.} A short phillips screwdriver, 6 screws and she opens right up.
All that and no fake carbon stickons to make it faster.
Total expense $210
Let it breathe..........

 

26K on an air filter?

No wonder the bike was sluggish.

All you did was proper maintnance, now seal the airbox back up...keeping it open is not needed.

I am surprised more guys have not responded to this topic. After all its the best easiest mod. Who wouldnt want to know as many of these as possible. I really dont think my input on this topic is really anything earth shattering,but my best cheapest mod,that is on a used VFR ,would be new spark plugs a new air filter,stock or aftermarket and an oil and filter change. Now that mod is intended for getting more power output from the engine. Some of you guys may have great tips on how to improve handling and the like so please jump in with some thoughts. eddie

For $30.00 I would have to say that the Dynojet O2 eliminators have so far been the best bang for the buck. You can't beat the feeling of hearing that V4 howl through a nice set of cans though...........:biggrin:

 

Eddie, those are service items and important ones at that but not a mod.

IMO, the best bang for the buck mod is a -1 front sprocket. Will give you the same or more seat of the pants performance increase as pipes/filter for less than $25.

.10 cent O2 sensor eliminators from Radio Shack are right up there too. These are required for closed loop bikes when adding a PC3 or TFI box and typically cost $30.00 from vendors like NorcalBoy bought from. hee-hee!:biggrin:

yes the -1 tooth on the front sprocket would be one of the best and least expensive mods.

 

Easiest Mod

The easiest and cheapest (free) mod will do nothing for performance but does slightly improve appearance, especially if you seldom ride 2-up. Remove pass. grab handles and replace with body color, flush mount covers found under you seat. Then remove pass peg brackets. Naked floating rear wheel looks great. Fender eliminator looks good too but that costs a couple bucks.
The best, easiest, cheapest way to play around with performance is ( like others have said) to change gear/sproket ratio.

Another free, very beneficial mod right along these lines is one that dynojet has you do when you install one of their jet kits in the second gen (86-89) models (both 700 and 750). youll simply need to remove the gas tank to gain access to the airbox. remove the airbox lid and just drill about 21 holes in 3 rows on your airbox lid, and remove the snorkel from the front of the lid.

obviously a k&n air filter compliments this very well, but for those of us who dont have a lot of cash to be throwing around, this is a great place to start.

not only will this greatly improve how well your bike breathes, but the bike has a strangely appealing growl when its under a hard load (wide open throttle).
