...in the gas tank. Not only did the tech at Ron Ayers and another at my local bike shop both mentioned that adding two teaspoons of oil to the gas when filling up the bike not enough for the engine to smoke.

Have any of you heard this before?

yes, heard of it, never did it, if your not going to use the bike for a while, top it off up to the cap and be done with it.

In my 40 years of mechanical interaction, any sign of oil on a spark plug wasn't good (4T). You have to wonder where that guidance came from and the reason why that was put out in the first place. How are you supposed to accurately read spark plugs if you artificially add oil into the mix? you aren't, that's the point. From me - 2 thumbs down.

The tech at Ron Ayers explained to me that his coworker is not only a mechanic at the dealer but he also competes on dirt bikes, ATVs, go carts and just about anything else with a four cycle small engine. By doing this he never has had to rebuilt a carburetor.

I wouldn't know because my VFR is strictly a mundane daily rider which is fine with me.

Stop consulting the RonAyers tech....If you look at the frequent posters on this site, I am guessing we would have over 200 years combined experience....

Ok I'll start with you instead of a service techs at a dealer that's been in business for 50 years.

I'm not sure we are talking about a causal relationship here, perhaps more of a correlation. It might not be that adding a small amount of 30w to your gas prevents carbs from having to be rebuilt, more that a mechanic at the dealer who also competes on dirt bikes, ATVs, go carts and just about anything else with a four cycle small engine, is the type of person that is constantly using and maintaining his equipment AND happens to add some 30wt oil to his gas.

If it is such a light ratio (~2 teaspoons / 5+ gal) that it doesn't smoke or eventually foul plugs, I'm not sure exactly what it is doing. There is a fool proof way to prevent most carb issues and your bike already has them. Carb drains, one on each bowl.

If it makes you feel better to do it, do it. I don't see it harming anything, even if I don't see the realized benefit of always carrying around a little container of 30w on a ride or trip.

I never heard that adding 2-stroke oil to the fuel should do good in a 4-stroke. Maybe ask your tech to explain the actual reason and why the apparent effect.
I do think that the only way to avoid rebuilding carbs on old bikes is to avoid old bikes - especially those with carbs :).

You were not supposed to know that ! its a deep secret only for the illuminati of superior motorcycles. :gandalf:

if you follow those directions, not only will your bike run 10mph faster, it will regrow your hair, reduce your waistline and improve whatever furtive sex life you might have.
