OK thanks - I have been using Simple Green and that's probably OK for a lot of stuff but for painted calipers....your technique I'm sure would be the way to go. I will give it a try.

Also....do you mean "Dawn" instead of "Dove"?

Ha ha - that's funny. OK, I just set up my Sonic and am going for it! Excited because I love my little Sonic and would MUCH rather let it do all the dirty work!

Two sets of calipers - one with pistons still installed......

    Stay tuned....

Not sure of Capts set up, but I use an old clip on bar in a vise for my setup.

Pretty much the same. My master is a VT1100C unit that was for one inch bars. Bolted to some "extra" aerospace titanium clamped in a vice.

    Hello all....

I made a little progress on the brake calipers. They are clean enough now to proceed with the re-assembly.

I mentioned earlier that in addition to the ones removed from this bike, I had a pair in my spares stash. Good thing too because the spares are not only in better condition, those are the ones I was able to get those pistons out. The ones that came off the bike I am still working on - for now satisfied to just clean up and leave sitting treat with a penetrate. Additionally, I decided to try my hand at re-painting them and have a spray paint can of gold brake caliper paint coming on Monday.

In the meantime I can go forward with the spares for this gorgeous blue bike.

The last stage of cleaning was using the small brass rotary tool brushes shown below. They were amazing in cleaning off remaining residue after the Sonic treatment. I also used some long thin ones with my Impact driver. And a small hand held wire brush. Blast cabinet would probably be ideal but I don't have that.

Again - these are the spare calipers I had on hand. Not perfect but in really nice condition, so will look great on the bike!

No worries. Just makes it easier to follow along for those trying to see the progression of things. For your bike - and for this one. Thanks! :)

Feels good to finally be moving forward on this bike.

Front brakes are finished and working great.

Next up is the clutch. Master working fine but took the slave off for clean and rebuild. Came right out with a little air, which was nice.

I replace all my bleeders with speed bleeders, BTW. Seems to make it easier to bleed.

I miss my shop buddies SO BAD. Such a big hole in my heart.

This is Freddie Spencer's last night, resting in the shop while I work.

Somewhere I have a picture of Joey Dunlop steadying a 86 VFR engine on a milk crate for me while I check/adjust the valves.

"Wasabi" is a great name for your Macaw!

I used to have an Umbrella Cockatoo named "Matilda". She was so sweet......

Despite a rebuild of the slave....I couldn't get the line bled all the way today - or the slave didn't want to work anyway. I even loosed the banjo bolt and had fluid coming out, so I know it's there. Possibly a problem with the master but I'm going to pull the slave first and leave the line attached and see if it's even moving. PITA for something so routine!

Get this resolved then it on to the fuel/carbs - can't wait!

And these are the calipers that came off the bike. I finally got them all washed and ready for painting. Hoping this paint doesn't come out as bright and shiny as the cap denotes!
