So...Pretty sure (famous last words) that it was a bad earth, The cables have now been sanded and the frame mount has been sanded clean as well.
My reasoning is : it would run and suddenly die. I would then run battery flat trying to start it. Take battery out, and in doing so moving the earth cable , basically resetting the earth contact. Insert battery and fires right up, will report back.

I have now got this tiny R1 :Eyebrows:rectifier positioned, I am putting a voltmeter and a temp guage on the triple tree, to it to monitor anything screwey. I am getting a ZX10 rectifier as well (same plugs) that i will test and keep as a spare

Additionally it seems i got the carbs right(bench synch) as she fires right up, after about 30 sec on choke she can run without, and settles down nicely. A few ticking noises, but i will look at the valve gaps once she has been run a bit (only got 20 000 km on clock)

    Excellent.

Some RC24/26 engines make noise even when everything is in proper condition and adjustment. They seem to have personalities. All of mine check out and and were adjusted by me using the same tools and technique. They are all different, from "quiet" (58K miles) to initially disconcerning (14K miles).

I stopped caring, put in my ear plugs and wring their fucking necks.

    So good times.
Bike is running real nice , attached the thermometer and voltmeter to keep an eye on rectifier

    Just the bodywork to come

Also found if battery is not quite full, around 11 volts, its enough to swing but not fire.

They are super finicky about that. Crank with pretty good speed, but not fire. Attach a jumper battery... instant start.

Is that an '86 thing? Don't think I've ever had that on mine (88). If the battery is too flat to start its not spinning!

Likely. 87 saw a change to a digital ignition system. The pulsar coil triggers were altered and ditched the cam position sensor.

OK this bike is kicking my ass... hate these non specific kinda problems..

So I bought a new battery, lithium. Left it overnight on charge
Hooked it up. Nice space saver
    20241130_125354.jpg

    Space for spares.

Click.instant start leave it on choke. No worries. Futz around with it on/off about 5 times.. at all times instant start. Take it down the road(like 1 km) get back and notice a drip by the underneath of the carbs

Clean off weeping on carb bowl(wet)
Go to start (voltmeter reading 13.2v) nothing, niks, nada. Slap another sparkplug in..no spark. After swinging I am looking at the voltmeter(connected to batt terminals) after I release the started I see a voltage of around 12 volts, this then soon reverts higher (around 13)

It's crazy how well it starts and runs with full charge... but this is not sustainable ..

    Rectifier outputting constant 14.2

No idea what the next steps are with regard to the no- spark...(carbs are a small thing). this bloody bike is driving me back into the arms of the BSA which is a good indication of just how frustrating this is

And we are back. So been chasing gremlins the last few weeks and finally nailed it.

Pulse coil pickups don't work when they get a little hot, windings old etc.
Managed to get a set from a forum member , thanks Joe.!
Whilst awaiting then I reached out locally and got a loaner set From a mate, slapped them in an problem sorted. I'll just replace this set when the others arrive.

Then I had a slight leak on a float bowl, or so I thought... eventually it turned out the crossover tube's orings had broken the seal so I had to whip it out and replace orings... I only removed the one carb, so it actually went pretty easy

So no more leaks. Whoop whoop...not duying when hot... but of course...it's the gift that keeps on giving... I suspect one of the idle jets has some crud in it which I am hoping will blow clear... or carbs off again IMG-20250102-WA0034.jpeg 20250104_163512.jpg 20250104_171335.jpg 20250102_152400.jpg

Carbs had been worked over by an PO idiot and were broken at the mounts?
