My research tells me the 1982 ONLY VT250F rods are the same as the VF500F. Rod bearings are the same as are the crankshaft bearings. BUT.....information is sketchy on the 82 model, and everything after that YM has a different P/N for the conrod for the 250. Also note the front and rear conrods are different. I have yet to firgure out why. Everything seems the same????? V-4 Hondas appear to all have different conrods front and back FYI.

It also appears that the conrod and crank bearings are readily available all over the world due to this engine being in production for so long!
I am not scared of the parts situation at all right now. CMSNL and Webike seem to have everything I need. But at a fairly stiff price!

I bought a large socket and used a dremel to make the notches. Not a precision tool but it did the job.

Got a crank from a junkyard in PA, the rod is coming from Germany.

Work got in the way of a good time AGAIN but work is progressing. Going to pasti-gauge the main and conrod bearings tomorrow.

Lot of cleaning to get any traces of metal out of the crankcases.

Plastigauge....wierd stuff. I had this laying around for 10+ years and it appears to be still good.

Not sure if most people have ever seen this stuff. Pretty amazing and simple. Just put a line of it on the bearing journal and assemble the lower crankcase. Torque to spec and then remove the crankcase and check how much the plastic was smashed by the bearing.

It is really thin, almost a thread.

I hear that. What a PIA it was to do the conrods today. I am super glad the clearance came out good. Not sure what I would have done if the clearance did not come out right. The bearing inserts are expensive a hell and luckily I got a good set of inserts on the used conrods I got bought.

Short block is finally finished....moving on to the heads now!

Lucky I have a lot of experience rebuilding the VF500 engine so this one was a snap to assemble. IMG_0278.JPG
