    Hi all,

What are the ways to visually identify a 6x from a non-6x?

    Thanks!

Okay let me add to this since I've learned more, I think. :) This info found via google, not sure if fact or not.

I'm told the '86 VFR750 had an option at time of purchase to add an HRC race package. This package came with flat-slide carbs and some other upgrades.

The better question is does anyone know about this package? If it in fact was an option what did it come with? And how can someone identify whether a 750 has this package or not?

    Thanks in advance!

Never heard of a "package" such as that being available to the "regular" consumer but that doesn't mean it never was.

Certainly should be pretty easy to check the carbs from the side of the bike and see if they are Flat-slides or the standard CV carbs.

Keep us posted on what YOU discover as I'm sure others would be interested as well.

    Rick

There was a HRC race kit that was available to purchase for the 86, but you didn't just add it like an option. Privateer racers purchased it from HRC, and I think it was something like $4000.

The 6x is not just a kitted 86 VFR. It is a HRC prototype racer and only a handful were made. It looks like an 86 VFR but actually shares very few parts.

Yes! I've learned that the 6x is a full factory bike they only made a few of. The flat slide carbs, titanium side cases, valves, etc. And I found the same info on the $4k HRC racer kit.

It was the 1986/87 VFR750RK... Not to be confused with the VFR750RK (FFS Honda) which was the 1989 RC30 VFR750R(K).

Yes, sorry if you thought I was implying it was a purchasable model. I was answering the question "does anyone know about this package?" with copies of the original literature for it. Kit gives ~20hp over a stock RC24 (and the 6X had another 10 on top again).

CMSNL has the 'fiche for the parts too. https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-vfr750rk-hrc-racing-kit-usa_model35114/partslist/

    100%

Just need a time machine to go back and order all the NF1 bits.... Bit of a short life on them all (5000 Km for the pistons, 2000 Km for the valves) so probably want to stock up on a few!

Of course that's "racing" replacement schedule. Have you ever looked at the racing schedule for a CRF450 Motocross? It was surprisingly very low hours for pistons and valves too.

I believe the 6X was a full on HRC engine that was the test bed for the next generation of RVF and ultimately the RC30.

    Basically yes.

It was the full HRC engine that was (mildly) productionised to become the basis for the RC30 engine (and a large chunk of the later RC24, if you look to the parts book the gearbox on the later RC24 is almost entirely RC30 apart from ratios). The rest of the bike basically being a productionised RVF (things like a thicker, stronger frame etc).

In 1988 they were still racing the VF based RVF however occasionally racing the VFR based version (aka the 6 speed) which was something like ~21mph faster!
