Soaked all fasteners early this morning with a penetrate. Also shot some lubricant on certain items. Then went out a little while ago and started the removal process. All went great - no broken off fasteners!

Thinking I should wait on getting the carbs off after getting all the hydraulics done, but we'll see.

I'll also work on some surface cosmetics before any re-assembly. And drain the oil and coolant.

Still have to change the plugs and oil filter too.

Hey my clutch slave gasket remained intact! ;)

    Good evening fellow viffers! :)

    Update on the project.

Monday morning I went through my spares inventory and was delighted to find almost everything I needed for getting this machine back on the road.

Including a spare complete set of brake calipers...in better condition than those that I took off the bike. Pretty sure I got these off eBay to use for the upcoming Yellow bike restoration, which is in line to be done after this one. Oh well.....I need them now so glad to have them.

This afternoon, I finally had a chance to dig in, starting with said brake calipers.

See pics below. And a question, I have......why are some of the pistons installed upside down and some not.

Tomorrow I will pop them out and begin the cleaning process.

Also - check out how nice a condition the pads are in! :)

Thanks, as always for any input! :)

Another quick question........if I wanted to use one....is there a generic or other model gas cap I could use instead of the OEM version on this tank?

Wouldn't have to lock or even look "right" - just be functional.

    Thanks!

Finally got a chance to work on the brake calipers - got all the pistons out and will begin the cleaning process. Took apart the rear brake MC too but having trouble finding the right replacement pieces. Might have to buy a kit. :( Also got the clutch slave apart.

Found out the pistons in the rear caliper are supposed to be installed open end towards pad.

Couldn't get my new hydraulic jig to work (despite wasting 3 hours) so just used air to pop out the pistons.

No issues finding sources for parts.

In fact, I have in my possession boxes and boxes of parts. Many of which include kits for brake caliper, clutch master cylinder, brake master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, and rear brake master cylinder.

Just so happens the various kits I have don't seem to be matching up with my rear brake master cylinders. Plural because so far I've taken 3 of them apart and trying to match up the right kits.

I'll get it sorted out. Even if I have to buy another kit, was my point.....

    Progress report......

Completed rebuilds: Rear brake MC & caliper, Front brake MC and calipers, Clutch MC and slave. All awaiting re-install after I get the cosmetic work done. Plus gotta pull and swap out the carbs.

    Brake work can be nasty!

She's still on guard duty! :)

    Question about these calipers.

The rear one has it's pistons with the "open" side toward the pad, as shown in this photo.....

    IMG_7141.JPG

Which piston is installed correct side up in the photo below for the front calipers? Or does it matter?

The one on the right likely just still has the damper puck still in place. See if it wants to lever out.

I substituted it for another just like the one on the left - so I now have all 4 like it (the one on the left - no puck).

I just want to know if they are supposed to be re-installed the same way I found the one on the left. Or with the opened end downward.

    Thanks!

Originally the front pistons are installed with the cavity inward (opposite of conventional wisdom) and the puck on the solid end.

It doesn't really matter, I have done it both ways.

So ideally.......solid end goes in goes in first....and cavity should face the pad, right?
