Ok, so I did some research on this and my buddy Rich and I both decided to try the auto oils. I have about 1000 miles on the Valvoline Syn Power 20W-50. Rich has the same on his Castrol Syntec 10W-40 in his CBR600F2. So, far I haven't noticed any difference. Engine runs great and clutch and tranny are no different. I was pretty convinced after talking to a friend of Rich's. This guy has been using 10W-30 auto oil in his R1 racing engines for years. He has been a motorcycle mechanic for about 20 years and has always used auto oil. He has done extensive dyno testing on his racing engines and wins races all the time. So, if that isn't convincing enough read more below.

This guy is a VFR750 owner and retired oil company chemist:

    engine oil

I use Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5-40. The synthetic for trucks has no friction modifiers(which causes clutch slippage) and has higher zinc and phosphorus(anti wear agents) than automotive synthetics. My VFR runs cooler and no clutch slippage what so ever

I have been riding bikes for over 30 years, and up until last year used Castrol GTX in all my bikes, street and dirt. I had no engine problems whatsoever. After getting my VFR and doing a lot of reading and talking to some other riders, I switched over to Rotella systhetic. It is designed for high mileage diesel and gas applications and seems to be working great. It seems to make my bike run a little cooler and quieter, and although I change my oil every 3,000 miles, it is nice knowing it was designed to go 30,000 miles in a tubocharged diesel. Also, I have seen a report where all the different brands of oil filters were tested extensively, and the Walmart filters tested better than most of the name brands.

I am all for buying in bulk, and am a frequent Costco buyer, but exactly how many oil changes could a person get from a 55 gallon drum?

I'm for Pure One and Mobile One fully syn. I don't like the car oil idea. I used it on one bike I owned, a BMW k-100, as it really did have a mildly modified automobile engine. But I spend some cash on the VFR, I will spend some cash on the oil. Seems like cheap insurance over the life of the bike.

However, the old adage holds true: Some oil is better than no oil, clean oil is better than dirty oil, blah, blah, blah....

"Motorcycle Consumer News" had a well done oil comparo, so check their archives...
the difference between good oils and better oils is mostly in their additives.

Amsoil in my bikes and vehicles. We run Amsoil in our racebikes and have never had any problems. We run endurance with one of our bikes and our longest race is 8 hrs, may not sound like much, but 8 hrs of race pace at 10k-14k RPM is brutal on oil. The Amsoil comes out looking like it did when it went in.
